Bill Nye the Science Guy: “Rocks and Soil”

PART 1 All of the rocks in the world used to be igneous rock called molten
rock.
The pits in the rock were formed by gas bubbles in liquid rock that came out
of a volcano.
When rocks come out of the volcano onto the earth, they can PUSH the older
rocks.
Soil comes from weathered rock which comes from erosion and breakdown of
rocks.
What are the 3 types of rocks? Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic.

PART 2 Every rock you see used to be DIFFERENT.

Rocks are always changing, and are part of something we call the rock cycle.
The reason why we have volcanoes is because there are plates of rock called
tectonic plates, and they are always moving.
The rock cycle has been going on for millions and billions of years.
Name 3 ways rocks can be broken down: weathering, erosion, and pressure.
Does soil have layers? YES
As you go through the different layers, the color of soil becomes DARKER.

PART 3 Diamond is the hardest substance known to man, and only diamond
will cut diamond.
The only difference between coal and a diamond are millions of years and
extreme pressure.
Both coal and diamond are made of carbon.
The crystals from the Epsom salt form crystals just like rocks.
