What is a VPN ?
A VPN or Virtual Private Network is a network between the VPN client(s) and the VPN server. The
advantage of this network is, that it is fully encrypted and the whole network traffic of the VPN client
will go through the encrypted tunnel.
The VPN client never access other (web)servers directly, everything will be requested from the VPN
server and the VPN server will forward the request.
How buying a VPN doesn’t make you anonymous
When you connect your computer or phone to a VPN server, you establish an encrypted tunnel
between your device and that server. Nobody can see what’s happening in the middle of this
tunnel, not even your ISP.
And yet, it doesn’t make you magically anonymous. You’re just moving the risk down the VPN
tunnel as the VPN company can see all your internet traffic.
Thats why buying a vpn service is not a good idea because at the end your data is sold for marketing.
Why do I want to host my own VPN server
Having your own VPN means that you have full control over it and only you are able to read the
logs of the server.
Ok SO LETS GET STARTED
How to setup your own vpn
Requirements:
Cloud Portal (Azure,Digital Ocean and AWS is recommended)
A Open VPN Access Server License (Only If you want to connect many devices with your
vpn otherwise free works fine)
1. In this tutorial I will be using Digital Ocean.
2. Go to your Digital Ocean dashboard and click on create New Project.

3. Follow the Steps:-
- 1. Enter project name. - 2. Choose project purpose as Other.
- 3. In purpose detail write anything. - 4. Click on Create Project.
4. Click Skip for Now
5. Click on Create button at the top right corner next to the Notification Icon.

6. Now select Droplets from the drop down menu.
7. Now in Images Section move to Marketplace tab.

8. Now in the search box input OpenVPN and choose OpenVPN Access Server from the results.
9. Now in Choose a plan section select Basic plan and in CPU options select Regular with SSD and
select $10/mo size.
10. Now in Choose a Datacenter region section. Choose the location for your VPN (if you choose NY
to connect to then your IP will be of New York)
11. Now in Authentication section choose what suits you best either SSH keys or Password.
12. Now click on Create Droplet.
13. Now wait for it to deploy.
15. Now press win-key+R, this should open a run windows in the bottom left corner of your screen.
Now in that window type cmd in the input box and click ok or press enter.
16. Now connecting to your VPS via Windows/Linux/Mac:-
If Using Username and Password:- ~use the syntax ssh username@ip-address
If Using SSH Key:- ~use the syntax ssh -i key.pem username@ip-address

17. After connecting to your VPS via SSH you should see an agreement now type yes and hit enter.
18. Now it will ask your some questions just hit enter on everyone as shown in the screenshot.
19. Now it will start setting up the VPN.
20. After completion of the previous step go to the admin panel of your VPN by Visiting this URL:
https://YOUR_VPS_IP:943/admin
and then you should see a message like Your connection is not private, just click advanced and click on
Proceed
Note: You have to replace YOUR_VPS_IP in url with your VPS IP (some people don't get it thats why I
wrote it ).
21. Now go back to your browser and login with your admin account:-
Username: openvpn
Password: YOUR_ADMIN_ACC_PASSWORD_THAT_YOU_JUST_CHANGED
22. Now click on Agree.
23. Now if you want to connect more than 2 devices at the same time to your VPN then you can enter
your activation key that you purchased. Otherwise you can only connect 2 devices at a time to your VPN
for free.
24. Now go to the Configuration section and select VPN Settings.
25. Now in the VPN Settings there will be Routing section and in there is "Should client Internet traffic
be routed through the VPN" option make sure the Box right next to it says "Yes". If its turned off turn it
on.
26. Now scroll down and click Save Settings (only if your previous option was turned off and you turned
it on).
27. Now If you saved settings then click on Update running server.
28. Now open the following URL in your browser:-
URL: https://YOUR_VPS_IP:943
Now in the opened page login with your admin username and password as before and click on Sign In.
29. Now choose the OS Platform where you want to connect to the VPN and click on the icon. If you
already have OpenVPN client installed then you can click on "Yourself (user-locked-profile)" to download
the configuration file and manually import it to the client.
29. Now run the setup and you should see this warning by Windows because this setup was downloaded
from your server and is unrecognized Not A Virus(You can see in the second screenshot). Just click on
More Info and click on Run anyway

36. Now launch the OpenVPN Connect app and set it up.
40. Now if you downloaded your setup from your VPS then your profile will be pre imported. And if you
have OpenVPN Connect Already installed and just downloaded the configuration file then you need to
import it.
41. Now click on this switch to connect to your VPN and input your admin username and password as
before and click ok.
42. Now you should be connected.
43. Good score on whoer.net
