Comprehension
Answering questions based on a story

Read the story carefully and answer the questions that follow.

Morton opened the basement door and peered down the dark staircase. His heart was thumping nonstop

as he ran down the steps, two at a time. When he reached the last step, he stopped to catch his breath. Then

slowly, he turned the doorknob.

Morton stepped onto the floor that was the opposite of the hard concrete that he had walked on

previously. Each step he took was slow as his feet sank into the floor. Morton tried his best to hurry. As

he walked, the people began to appear around him. There was Aaron, the one who liked playing shooting

computer games just like Morton did. He was talking to Tom, the one who liked playing football like

Morton did. Then there was Jessica. She was the one with the long flowing auburn hair like the first girl

he liked in kindergarten. Then there was Maurice. A little further on, Jermaine appeared and then Paul. All

had been strangers to Morton at first until he spoke to them. Then he realized how similar each of them

was to him and how well he got along with them.

Morton arrived at the dark brown two-storey building. Like the people, it seemed to just appear as

Morton arrived. He entered the building and walked towards the third door on his left. Pushing open the

door, he nodded at the teacher and other students inside and sat down to begin his first class for the day

– mutant powers. Like everyone around him, Morton wanted to find out how to better harness the energy

in his body to create powers that normal humans would not have.

Comprehension
Answering questions based on a story

The lesson became more interesting about twenty minutes later when the teacher finally allowed

them to put the skills they had learnt to good use. “Watch out!” Ariel shouted, aiming her fingers in a gun

formation at a target. Bang! Bang! The target collapsed. Ariel burst out laughing and clapped her hands

with glee. Ritz spun around slowly. Then he spun faster and faster and faster. He was nothing but a white

cloud. He flitted among the trees; he flew so high that he disappeared from sight. Then just as suddenly, he

was back on the grass, sneezing uncontrollably from all the dust in the air that had entered his nose.

Morton smiled as he watched his classmates try out their powers. Each of them was very pleased.

Even his teacher was pleased as he stood watching them. Morton saw Chloe, a young girl who had just

developed the power of setting fire to something if she stared hard enough at it. She was smiling but

Morton knew that she was uncertain about her power. Even as she told him that creating fire made her very

powerful, Morton was the only one who could tell that she was anxious to find out if she could change her

power.

“I know you’re unhappy. You can fool anyone else, but not me,” he said with a knowing smile.

Chloe looked surprised at first, then she agreed and nodded.

“I wish I had your power. It’s so much more useful.”

Each day in the other dimension lasted several hours. Morton’s mother always thought that he was

doing his homework, but he was not. Anyway, she was at work and only came back at dinnertime. He

wondered if he would ever dare tell her the truth.
