SCIENCE GRADE 10
INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT
This module is beneficial to learners focused on the practical applications of electromagnetic waves concepts,
theories and principles link to its technology, the processes and changes occurring in our environment and needed
knowledge and information about science – related problem in our society today.
Humans are still blind to much of what surrounds them despite the accurate view of the world that their eyes
have given them. There exists a universe of colors belonging to a thin band of visible spectrum that the human eye can
detect. In your earlier science classes, you have learned that this optical spectrum is actually a color continuum from
red to violet that each corresponds to different energies of light.
Meanwhile, we encounter the invisible spectrum when we listen to the radio, eat microwaved food, or have
our broken bones X-rayed. However, perhaps, during these times, we do not realize that the radio, X-ray, and
microwave are also energies of light.
It contains guidelines and procedures on how to perform the given tasks for the expected output of learners
which is easily understood, attainable and measurable.
LEARNING SKILLS
MELC: Cite examples that show practical applications of the different regions of EM waves such as the use of radio
waves in telecommunications (S10FE-IIc-d-48)
KEY CONCEPTS:
Electromagnetic Waves – waves that get propagated due to the simultaneous variations of the electric and
magnetic field intensity
Radio Waves – the lowest range of the EM spectrum.
DISCUSSION:
**RADIO WAVES
Radio waves are EM waves found at the left end of the EM Spectrum (arranged from low frequencies to high
frequencies). They are the type of EM waves with the longest wavelength but they are of low frequencies thereby
carrying the lowest energy from among the EM waves. Radio waves transmit information through pictures, texts and
sound.
Characteristics:
1. Not line of sight
2. Can pass through walls
3. Longer range
4. Not light sensitive
Some disadvantages:
1. Communication devices that make use of of the same frequencies interfere with their transmission.
2. It is easier to “eavesdrop” since signals are transmitted in space rather than a wire.
3. More costly than infrared.

Activity 1. Direction: Below are the different applications of radio waves. Using small letters, fill in the boxes to
identify the word/s being described. Write your answers in this Activity Sheet.
ASSESSMENT
Direction: Answer the following questions. Write your answers on the answer sheet.
1-3. Describe radio waves based on its frequency, wavelength and energy.
