QUESTION 1

Read BOTH TEXT A and TEXT B and answer the set questions.

TEXT A

AI – THE NEW REVOLUTION

1 Artificial intelligence (AI) is a fascinating field that is constantly evolving. AI has

been around for decades. While AI is often thought of as a new technology, the
concept has been around since the 1950s. Early AI systems were used to
perform tasks such as playing chess and solving mathematical problems.

2 AI is already all around us and used in many areas of our daily lives, from voice 5
assistants like Siri and Alexa to recommendation systems on streaming services
like Netflix and YouTube. It can be used to diagnose diseases by analysing
medical images and identifying early signs of disease potentially leading to
earlier diagnosis and more effective treatment.

3 AI can be used for natural language processing which is the ability of machines 10
to understand and interpret human language. This technology is already being
used in chatbots and voice assistants. Also, facial recognition technology is
being used for a variety of purposes, from unlocking smartphones to identifying
criminals. AI can also help reduce energy consumption by optimising energy
consumption in buildings, leading to reduced energy costs and a smaller carbon 15
footprint.

4 AI can create art through algorithms that analyse images and create new artwork
based on patterns and styles that it has learned. AI is being used to develop
self-driving cars. Self-driving cars rely on AI to navigate and make decisions on
the road. AI algorithms are clever enough to analyse weather patterns and other 20
data to predict natural disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes. AI is even
being used in space exploration, where it analyses data from space missions
and make decisions about how to proceed and in turn potentially lead to new
discoveries and breakthroughs.

5 But what is AI? AI refers to the ability of machines to perform tasks that typically 25
require human intelligence, such as learning, problem-solving, decision-making,
and language processing. AI technologies such as machine learning, natural
language processing, and robotics are already being used in many industries,
including healthcare, finance, manufacturing, and retail. There are two types of
AI: narrow AI and general AI. Narrow AI is designed to perform specific tasks, 30
such as recognising speech or playing chess. General AI, on the other hand, is
designed to perform any intellectual task that a human can do, like
understanding languages, making decisions and showing emotion.

6 AI learns through a process called machine learning. This involves training an

AI system using large amounts of data and algorithms. Businesses can use AI 35
in many ways, such as automating routine tasks, improving customer service,
and predicting market trends. For example, AI can be used to analyse large
amounts of data and identify patterns that may not be immediately visible to
humans. This can help businesses make more informed decisions, improve
efficiency, and reduce costs. However, with great power comes great 40
responsibility, and businesses must also be mindful of the risks and take steps
to protect their data.

7 Despite the many benefits of AI, there are also concerns around its use. One
major concern is the potential for AI to replace human workers, leading to job
losses and increased economic inequality. Another concern is the potential for 45
AI to be used for malicious purposes, such as cyber-attacks or identity theft. As
businesses continue to embrace AI and other technologies, it becomes
increasingly important to become security aware. Although AI progresses to
dominate the tech news, it should be used with responsibility in the workplace.
Advancements in AI will enable machines to become even smarter, making 50
them more efficient and effective in performing tasks. As AI continues to evolve,
it will also become more autonomous and able to make decisions without human
intervention.

8 AI is an exciting and rapidly evolving field that has the potential to revolutionise
the way we live and work, but we need to take steps to protect sensitive data, 55
prevent cyber threats, and ensure that AI systems are being used ethically. By
doing so, businesses can reap the benefits of AI while minimising the risks and
ensuring a safer and more secure future for all.

QUESTION 2

Bullying has become a problem of our time.

Read TEXT C below and list SEVEN points on how parents can deal with bullying.

INSTRUCTIONS

3. Number your sentences from 1 to 7.
4. Write only ONE point per sentence.
5. Use your OWN words as far as possible.
6. Indicate the total number of words you have used in brackets at the end of your
summary.

TEXT C

HOW TO BEAT THOSE BULLIES

1 Bullying in schools and on social media is increasingly in the spotlight. A 2013

survey found that over 50% of South African children were at risk of being bullied
at school. Social networking sites are powerful tools for bullies, therefore parents
need to be vigilant, by blocking communication with whoever posts offensive
messages.

2 Always listen to your child when they come to you for help. It’s important that you
believe them. Listen and respond thoughtfully. Sometimes just being heard
respectfully is the beginning of healing.

3 Work with your child as bullying involves a loss of dignity and control. Involving
your child in solutions helps them regain control. The best thing you can do to stop
bullying is to take a stand against it. But you can make the situation worse by
acting rashly.

4 Consider both positive and negative sides before doing anything or taking action.

5 The goal is to restore self-respect: it’s not about destroying the bully, but improving
your child’s resilience and self-respect. Sometimes this means confronting the
bully, but sometimes not. You and your child should figure out how to get there
together.

6 Delete all nasty messages and posts, but make a hard copy first - you may need
to save it for evidence later. Report it as most social media sites don’t tolerate
cyberbullying and are willing to help. Don’t hesitate to inform the school about what
happened.
