INTRODUCTION

The main components of this research are introduced in this chapter,

which provides a comprehensive overview for the reader. It covers the

background of the study, the conceptual framework, and the statement of the

problem.

Background of the Study

Denim, a versatile and durable fabric with its distinctive diagonal ribbing,

has gained global popularity as the go-to material for jeans and clothing.

Originally designed as workwear, denim has transcended its utilitarian roots to

become a prominent feature in high fashion. To cater to the evolving demands of

the industry, innovative denim variations have emerged, incorporating fibers such

as lyocell, bamboo, viscose, rayon, polyethylene terephthalate, and elastane. In an

effort to adopt more sustainable practices, environmentally-friendly washing

techniques like stonewash, acid wash, moon wash, monkey wash, and enzyme

wash have been introduced, replacing harmful substances like hypochlorite and

pumice stones (Akı, Candan, Nergis; Önder, 2020).

However, alongside its popularity, denim has also become synonymous

with the fashion industry’s waste problem. As Saha (2023) highlights, the

production and consumption of denim jeans on a massive scale have raised

significant environmental concerns. The Philippines, in particular, faces a

pressing issue of denim waste due to its substantial contribution to the global

volume of textile waste. With approximately 2 billion pairs of jeans produced

annually worldwide, the need for sustainable practices in the fashion industry is

crucial. While specific data on denim waste in the Philippines may be lacking, the

broader context of textile waste, including denim, underscores the importance of

reducing environmental impact and promoting a circular economy. Fortunately,

the durability of denim presents an opportunity for upcycling and addressing the

issue of denim waste. By repurposing denim into fashionable bags, we can not

only divert denim waste from landfills but also offer consumers a sustainable and

stylish alternative. This approach aligns with the growing awareness of textile

recycling and the utilization of recycled materials in denim production. By

embracing sustainable practices and incorporating recycled denim, we can

contribute to the reduction of environmental impact and foster a more circular and

responsible fashion industry (Saha, 2023).

To address the increasing demand for sustainable practices in the textile

and apparel industry, there is growing interest in using recycled materials,

including fibers, yarns, and fabrics, in the production of new denim products. The

decision to incorporate recycled materials occurs during the design and product

development stages and continues throughout the manufacturing processes.

Important considerations for recyclable denim designs include using mono

materials, eliminating toxic substances, implementing modular manufacturing for

easy removal or exchange, using compatible materials, and incorporating

recyclable labels or codes. Evaluating the environmental impact of denim

products throughout their lifecycle involves examining different phases and

taking action where it can be most effective in reducing the impact. Various tools,

such as economic instruments, substance bans, environmental labeling, voluntary

agreements, and product design guidelines, can aid in achieving this objective.

Life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology is one of these tools and is used to

quantify and compare the environmental impact of recycled denim fabrics. This

chapter also discusses the global denim market, environmental impacts of denim

manufacturing, sources of denim waste, and current recycling processes in the

textiles and apparel industry (Akı, Candan, Nergis; Önder, 2020).

The denim production has an environmental impact, in order to achieve

the UN’s sustainability goal until year 2030, a lot has to change. During its early

stages, denim production is highly water intensive and large amounts of pesticides

are also used. Those two combined affects the biodiversity locally as well as the

health of the farmers badly. Other treatments such as sandblasting puts different
chemical into the garment, due to lack of regulations and safety equipment the

textile workers health is at stake. With a circular economy in mind, there are

however certain options to reuse the denim products, both in the sense of

recycling and re-selling in second hand. Society as a whole such as manufacturers

and individuals have a responsibility to help achieve the twelfth goal and its

targets goals. This could perhaps be achieved by regulations, a change in demand,

increase of recycling and more information to the consumers about the production

of denim and how to decrease its consequences. (Tindwa, 2019)

Fashion accessories such as tote bags could well be targeted as

sustainable items, and due to highly demand especially in terms of

environmental friendliness have come to the market now and become familiar

among common people, the marketers tend to create a unique and stylish tote bag

that made up of un-used old jeans that the design was inspired of

bohemian style (Bladeta’s denim reusable bags, 2022)

Bags play an integral role in our lives, serving a multitude of purposes

beyond simply carrying our belongings. From functional backpacks to stylish

clutches, bags come in various shapes and sizes, catering to different needs and

occasions. Tote bags, known for their spaciousness, are perfect for carrying

everyday items and often feature long handles for shoulder carrying. Shoulder

bags, on the other hand, are smaller in size and typically have a single strap that
goes over the shoulder, providing ease of carrying. Clutch bags, designed to hold

just a few essentials like a phone, wallet, and keys, often come with a flap or snap

closure for secure storage. Crossbody bags resemble shoulder bags but feature a

long strap that goes across the body, allowing for hands-free wear. Messenger

bags, similar to crossbody bags, have a single strap that goes across the body.

Backpacks, larger than most other bag types, feature two straps that go over the

shoulders, making them ideal for carrying school or work supplies. Lastly, duffel

bags are perfect for packing clothes and other items for trips and adventures

(Lavie World, 2023).

Denim bags, in particular, offer a multitude of advantages in bag

manufacturing. Thanks to their exceptional strength and durability, denim bags

can withstand daily use and heavy loads, making them ideal for carrying items

that require extra protection. The timeless appeal of denim ensures that these bags

remain fashionable regardless of changing trends, while its versatility allows for

unique designs and the ability to blend seamlessly with other materials.

Additionally, denim bags are easy to maintain, as they can be machine-washed

without the risk of shrinking or wrinkling. Overall, denim bags provide a durable,

stylish, versatile, and low-maintenance option for bag enthusiasts, making them a

popular choice in the fashion world (Julia, 2023).

The bag industry is highly competitive and requires continuous innovation

and development, especially in the case of product design and improvement, to

keep up with changing consumer trends. Further, customers, particularly

millennials and Gen Z, are becoming more open to premium fashionable

accessories, including handbags, and are willing to experiment with various

branded superior fashion accessories due to evolving fashion perceptions and

increased exposure to global fashion trends. Since the majority of the global

young adult population is engaged in these social media platforms, handbag

companies are targeting their product range at this age group. Some of the major

players of the market are Christian Dior SE, Louis Vuitton SE, and Prada Holding

BV, which are dominating the handbags market. The female of age group ranging

15-64 years is the main consumer of the handbags market, with the gender

demographics portraying the share of the female population of more than 50% in

this age group, globally, accounting for the potential consumers of the market.

(Research and Market, 2024).

Upcycling, often referred to as creative reuse, is the process of

repurposing leftovers, waste products, unnecessary items, or unwanted items to

make new materials or items that are thought to be of higher quality, such as items

with artistic and environmental value. Upcycling can be defined as the process of

taking something that is throwaway and turning it into something more valuable.
Therefore, upcycling involves improving upon what is currently available. An

object no longer has value when it is discarded, and it must be disposed for it to

enter a new cycle of production & value creation. (Kharadi, 2023)

The fashion industry has long been associated with environmental

concerns, particularly the excessive generation of textile waste. In recent years, a

growing awareness of sustainability has led to a shift in consumer preferences and

a demand for more eco-friendly practices in the fashion world. Upcycling has

emerged as a powerful solution to address this issue, offering a creative and

sustainable way to transform old clothing into new, stylish pieces. Upcycling is a

powerful tool in the fight against fashion waste. By repurposing old clothing into

new, stylish pieces, upcycling extends the life of textiles, reduces the demand for

new resources, and minimizes the environmental impact of fashion production. As

consumers become more conscious of their choices, the role of upcycling in the

fashion industry is likely to grow, fostering a more sustainable and creative

approach to clothing consumption. (Scrapiy, 2024).

These results may be interpreted in that upcycled products can attract

consumers to better meet aesthetic and emotional, as well as green, value of

upcycled products by emphasizing unique design approaches, maintaining

environmental value compared to recycled products that emphasize only

environmental values with low-growth orientation and lack of aesthetic pursuit. In

other words, we propose the necessity of a comparative study of recycled

products and upcycled products by demonstrating that recycled products and

upcycled products have different consumption values even if they are the same

eco-friendly products. (Sustainability, 2019).

This thesis focuses on the market acceptance of upcycled denim into bags

in La Trinidad, Benguet. By exploring the market dynamics and consumer

preferences, this study aims to shed light on the potential for upcycled denim bags

to thrive in Benguet’s fashion market. With acceptability becoming an

increasingly important consideration for consumers, it is crucial to explore new

avenues for eco-friendly fashion. Upcycled denim bags have the potential to

capture the attention of conscious consumers, especially teenagers who seek

unique and fashionable choices. With acceptability becoming an increasingly

Conceptual framework

This chapter aims to provide a strong foundation for this study, which sets

forth the standards to define a research question and find appropriate, meaningful

answers for the same. It connects the theories, assumptions, beliefs, and concepts

behind your research and presents them in a pictorial, graphical, or narrative

format.

Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB)

Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) was used in this study to examine the

purchase behavior of denim upcycled bags. Several researchers have used TPB

for understanding the purchase intention concerning environmental issues. There

are many factors which impact the motivation of the consumer to become

involved in environmental behavior (Marzie Hatef Jalil, 2019). The theory of

planned behavior is an important issue for the environment is the amount of waste

produced today and its negative consequences for the environment. Waste that

can harm the environment and other community groups if it is not disposed of

properly after it has served its purpose for the organization to which it belongs.

Perhaps, waste from one industry can be a resource for another industry (Shanthi,

2017). Theory of Planned Behavior is a widely recognized model in psychology

and marketing that explains how individuals' attitudes, subjective norms, and

perceived behavioral control influence their intentions and, subsequently, their

actual behavior.

*Application to Upcycled Denim Bags:

Attitude consumers' attitudes toward upcycled denim bags play a crucial

role in their purchasing decisions. Positive attitudes, influenced by factors such as

environmental consciousness, fashion appeal, and quality of the product, are

likely to lead to a higher intention to buy.

Subjective Norms refer to the perceived social pressure or influence from

others in one's social circle. If consumers perceive that their peers value

sustainability, eco-friendliness, and fashion-forward choices, they are more likely

to consider purchasing upcycled denim bags.

Perceived Behavioral Control relates to consumers' beliefs about their

ability to acquire and use upcycled denim bags. Factors such as availability,

affordability, and ease of access to these products influence consumers' perceived

control over their purchasing decisions.

Intentions and Behavior according to the TPB, intentions are a key

predictor of behavior. If consumers have a positive attitude toward upcycled

denim bags, perceive social approval, and feel in control of their purchasing

decisions, they are more likely to intend to buy and, ultimately, purchase these

sustainable products.

*Implications for Marketing:

Businesses promoting upcycled denim bags can leverage the TPB model

by emphasizing the environmental benefits, fashion appeal, and social acceptance

of these products in their marketing campaigns. Highlighting the accessibility,

affordability, and quality of upcycled denim bags can enhance consumers'

perceived behavioral control and increase their likelihood of purchasing.

Collaborating with influencers, using social proof, and creating engaging content

that aligns with consumers' values can strengthen subjective norms and encourage

positive attitudes toward upcycled denim bags. By applying the Theory of

Planned Behavior to consumer behavior models related to upcycled denim bags,

businesses can better understand and influence consumers' intentions and

behaviors towards sustainable fashion choice.

4 A of Marketing

The first important thing is Acceptability, we can significantly reduce

waste and extend the lifespan of materials, avoiding the need to produce new

denim and ultimately lowering the environmental impact. Affordability, we will

not let our customer be unsatisfied with what we have done but let’s make the

price of the item more worth it. This is where we can strengthen our product and

focus on who our target customers are that can be easily found by our customers.

Lastly Awareness, it is where we can build our confidence to promote our

products that can also help us to our target customers. When considering the 4A's

- Acceptability, Affordability, Accessibility, and Awareness - in relation to

upcycled denim bags, these factors are crucial for the success and promotion of
sustainable fashion items. Here is a detailed breakdown of how these 4A's apply

to upcycled denim bags:

Acceptability in the context of upcycled denim bags refers to the

willingness of consumers to embrace and use these eco-friendly products. For

upcycled denim bags to gain acceptance, they must be seen as stylish, durable,

METHODOLOGY

This chapter discuss the procedures to be done to attain the data to be

needed. This chapter then presents the research design, population and locale of

the study, data collection instruments, data collection procedure, and the treatment

of data.

Research Design

Singh (2023), defines a research design as the plan or framework used to

conduct a research study. It involves outlining the overall approach and methods

that will be used to collect and analyze data in order to answer research questions

or test hypotheses. The type of research design to be used is quantitative research

in which this is an objective and employs statistical approaches. This type of

research is usually done using surveys and experiments. This study will undergo

random sampling. Random sampling is deemed appropriate because this study

involved an in-depth analysis of the market acceptance of upcycled denim bags in

the buying power of customers. In this sampling method, each member of the
population has an exactly equal chance of being selected. Therefore, the design of

this study will be a descriptive research design where frequencies, percentage,

graph and tables will be illustrated to depict the concept of findings. Descriptive

research will be undertaken to be sure and able to describe the characteristics of

the variables of interest in a situation.

Population and Locale of the Study

The population is the selected participants and place of interest that the

researcher wishes to investigate. This research study will be conducted in La

Trinidad, Benguet and the target participants would be selected randomly and are

based on their demographic profile. Random sampling is appropriate because this

gives every participant a fair chance and this method is used to choose a sample

from a larger population. To calculate the sample sizes, Yamane Formula is

appropriate to use in determining sample size in respect to the population under

study, allowing inferences and conclusions drawn from the survey to be applied to

the complete population form in which the sample size is drawn.

Data Collection and Procedure

This research section will go over the instrument that will be used to

obtain the data for the study. The survey instrument developed by the study’s

researchers will be validated by experts of the field after that. Next, the

researchers will submit a letter to the relevant Benguet State University

authorities asking for permission to conduct the study. The researchers will then

send a survey to the intended recipients after it has been authorized. Following the

return of each questionnaire, the information will be gathered and categorized.

Every piece of data gathered will be scrutinized, and the results will validate the

research endeavor. After that, the analysis’s findings will be given using a

descriptive approach.

Data Collection Instrument

The researcher will use a survey questionnaire in collecting data.

According to Bhandari (2023), questionnaire is a list of questions or items used to

gather data from respondents about their attitudes, experiences, or opinions. It is a

set of questions or other types of prompts that aims to collect information from a

respondent. This can be used to collect information about the target participants of

this study.

Treatment of Data
The researchers in this study will conduct a quantitative approach. The

method we, the researchers will apply to interpret the data effectively is a

percentage frequency distribution. According to Dollera (2019), a percentage

frequency distribution, in general, is a display of data that indicates the percentage

of observations for each data point or grouping of data points. It is a commonly

used method for expressing the relative frequency of survey responses and other

data. The percentage frequency distributions are often displayed as bar graphs, pie

charts, or tables.
