Instructions for Writing a semi - formal Letter/ Email (Cách viết thư bán trang trọng)

The format of a semi-formal letter/ email to a friend should include the following things:
Cấu trúc một lá thư bán trang trọng gửi cho bạn bè thường bao gồm:

1. Greetings (Lời chào)


Có thể sử dụng cách chào:
• Dear John,
Lưu ý sau Dear chỉ dùng tên (không dùng họ hay Mr, Mrs, …, vì như vậy sẽ thành trang trọng),
sau tên có dấu phẩy ‘,’.

2. Opening paragraph (Đoạn mở)


The opening paragraph is the place to react to your friend’s or relative’s email. In order to do
so, you can use a number of different expressions. Here we have some examples:
Đoạn mở là để bạn phản hồi lại thư của bạn bè. Để làm việc này, bạn có thể sử dụng một số cách
diễn đạt như sau:
• It’s nice / great / good to hear from you.
• It’s nice / great / good to read your email.
• I’m glad to hear your news.
• I’m excited about… (your news.)
• It’s great to hear that…
• I’m sorry to hear that…
• I’m really sorry to read your news.
• It was good to receive your email.
• Thank you very much for your email.

Also, it’s a good idea to ask your friend or relative how they are feeling, which you can do like this:
Bạn cũng có thể bắt đầu đoạn này bằng lời hỏi thăm. Bạn có thể sử dụng một số cách diễn đạt như sau:
• Hope you are doing well.
• How’s it going?
• How are you (doing)?
• How are things (going)?

3. Main paragraphs (Đoạn chính)
For the main paragraphs, there aren’t any fixed expressions which you must use, as it depends
mostly on what you have to write about. However, you should try to make use of connectors and
appropriate punctuation. So let’s take a look at common useful connectors and the punctuation we use
them with:
Trong phần nội dung chính không có cách diễn đạt cố định nào. Tùy thuộc vào nội dung để bạn có
thể sử dụng ngôn từ phù hợp. Tuy nhiên bạn nên cố gắng sử dụng từ nối và dấu câu phù hợp.
• … and… : to connect two similar things or ideas. - ‘and’ để nối hai ý tương đương.
I love reading and listening to music.
My favourite meal is fish and chips.
• …, but… : to connect two contrasting ideas. - ‘but’ để nối hai ý trái ngược.
I love watching Tv, but I don’t have a favourite show.
I am reading a book, but I don’t remember the title.
• . However, … : to connect contrasting ideas. - ‘However’ để nối hai ý trái ngược.
Last month, I went to the cinema. However, I didn’t enjoy the movie.
I am a very big fan of this author. However, I haven’t read his last novel.
• Moreover, … : to add more information about something. - ‘Moreover’ để thêm thông tin.
• … because… : to justify an opinion or idea. - ‘because’ để giải thích.
My mum is the perfect cook because she knows a lot of recipes and has plenty of
experience. Moreover, she experiments with different ingredients all the time.
• . Because of that, … : to justify an opinion, fact or idea. - ‘because of that’ để giải thích.
My mum likes to cook using new ingredients all the time. Because of that, she
creates original dishes every month.
• . As for…/ Regarding… : to switch to a new topic. - ‘As for…/ Regarding’ để chuyển ý.
As for/Regarding why I like this cookery show, I think it’s because it’s a great way to
see new recipes.
• Time linkers (từ nối thời gian): then, after that, yesterday, this morning, last summer, etc.
Last night, I watched a very good action film.

4. Closing paragraph (Đoạn kết)
The closing paragraph is used to start saying goodbye to the addressee and to ask for a response to
your email. So we can use the following expressions:
Trong đoạn kết bạn có thể sử dụng một số cách diễn đạt để nói lời tạm biệt và mong đợi phản hồi
thư của bạn:
• Well, it’s time to say goodbye.
• I really hope to hear from you soon.
• I’m looking forward to hearing from you.

5. Saying goodbye (Chào tạm biệt)


There are many ways in English to close an informal email. The most frequently used ones are the following:
Có nhiều cách khác nhau để kết thúc thư thân mật. Dưới đây là một số cách phổ biến:
• Best wishes,
• Sincerely,
• Regards,
Lưu ý: Sau lời kết có dấu phẩy ‘,’.

6. Signature: we sign the email with our name.


Chữ ký: tên của người viết.

Semi-formal Letter/ Email Topics


- You are travelling on holiday with a group of friends when your car broke down in a small
town which none of you had been to before. You are writing a letter to an English speaking
friend to describe what happened.

- You have just finished a short language course in Scotland. You are writing a letter to an
English speaking friend to tell him or her what you did on the course, how you spent your
free time and what the other people were like.

- You’ve just been on a visit to another country. You are writing a letter to your English
penfriend to describe what you saw and how you felt.

- This is part of a letter you reveive from an English penfriend:


“I enjoy my new job but I sit at a computer all day now. I don’t get much exercise. What
do you think I should do to keep fit.”
Now write a letter, giving your friend some advice about keeping fit.

- This is part of a letter you reveive from an English penfriend:


“I live in a really busy street. What is it like where you live? If you were able to move,
where would you like to live?
Now write a letter, answering your penfriend’s questions.
