10.2 Serial reading

To get access to the Serial Reading you need to follow the path below and choose the correct selection
depending on the vehicle WorkVehicleManufacturer/Model/TypeProtocol
Otherwise follow the path WorkProtocols but you must know which protocol is required.

NOTE : Each time New Genius reads the ECU it creates a file with HEADER.
.

At the end of the reading it is necessary to load the read file into the PC.

Once the protocol is opened it will be possible to select Reading

1. Click on Reading

2. After the display of ID, New Genius will ask to switch the dash-board on and off (this procedure is
required to verify the data). The reading progress bar will be displayed. After the reading you can save
the file that is inside the ECU of the vehicle.

The reading time depends exclusivley on the type of

ECU; most ECUs can be read in 5-8 minutes but many
require 25-30 minutes and in some particular cases you
may even need more than an hour.

At the end of the reading it will be possible to save the file

inside New Genius.

Then follow the instructions to complete this reading

operation.

When New Genius READING procedure is carried out, it is necessary to copy the file from SD card to

2. Once you have started the procedure, ECU identification numbers will be read again.
If the data displayed do not match with the hardware or software numbers click cancel and repeat the
procedure chosing the correct file.
If the data match, continue by clicking " OK ".

N.B.
Each time New Genius reads an ECU it creates a file with HEADER, it is a file characterized by all the
identification data (Manufacturer/Model/Type, date and time, protocol used etc.). This kind of code is
recognized by Race EVO also during the creation of the modified file. With this code Genius will be set
for the writing of the file.
If a file without HEADER is going to be written inside the ECU New Genius will ask ( to protect the ECU)
if the file chosen is the correct one.
For more details on how to extract the HEADER from the file refer to Chpt.13.2.1.

Reading time depends on the different kinds

of ECU; mostly 4-8 minutes are required;
some ECUs may need 20-25 minutes.

If the programming is confirmed it is possible to

control the programming procedure.

During this procedure do not perform any action on the vehicle or on NewGenius!!!

3. After programming a message window will confirm the end of the procedure.
Switch the dash-board off and click on OK.

NOW THE ECU PROGRAMMING HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT!

It is recommended to wait 15-20 seconds generally before switching the dash board on again and then 15-20
seconds before switching the engine on; this leaves time to the ECU to be set.

10.4 RECOVERY - VERIFICATION - TOOL

In some serial protocols some extra functions are available: RECOVERY to carry out a forced rewriting
of the ECU, with no file controls; VERIFICATION allows to know if an original file is “compatible” with the
ECU; TOOL including several options like:

- Errors erasing
- Reading/Writing injector codes
- Reading/Reset of the ECU COUNTERS
(programming counters)

1. RECOVERY
This procedure is almost the same as the “writing” one, the
difference is that New Genius DOES NOT control the file to
be written and it does not wait for any confirmation by the
ECU. This is aimed at “recovering” critical situations of ECUs
which do not work anymore, for instance when they were
incompletely programmed or written with wrong files. USE
this procedure ONLY if absolutely necessary and after
having contacted the technical support.

2. VERIFICATION
In some protocols the reading of the file is not
possible (ex. Flash_0090) or it is particularly long (ex.
FLASH_0056 which can be read in nearly 3 hours);
this function can be used to verify the ORI file that
you would like to download from the databank is the
same as the one in the ECU.
After having copied the original file from the computer
to New Genius, you can proceed with this verification,
select the file and follow the instructions to switch the
panel on/off. When the operation is completed New
Genius gives indications to use this file. Refer tot o
appendix “A” at the end of this manual for details.

3. TOOL  DEL. ERRORS

After having programmed some kind of ECUs, it may happen
(this is not a rule) that fault lights turn on.

This is why in some serial protocols (like for instance

FLASH_0082 for VAG ME7.1.1 ECU) the diagnostic and
error deleting function has been made available. In order to
execute this operation follow this procedure:
open the FLASH protocol supporting this function by
pressing WorkVehiclesselect the right vehicle or
Work Protocolsselect the FLASH protocol with the error
deleting function; select the TOOL button, execute the
deleting operation by clicking on DEL. ERRORS button;
follow the instructions to switch the panel on/off.

4. TOOL  READING INJECTORS / INJECTOR CODE

Refer to appendix “B” at the end of this manual for further details.

Now exit the software connection with the PC and unplug all hardware connections. Connect New
Genius with the vehicle and follow the instructions for the Serial Writing.

Another way to export/import files to and from New Genius allows to work with files also outside
Race EVO software programming. To export ECU files from Genius you need to double click on
Explore and then on File folder, inside you can find the folders in which files were saved: ID, Read,
Write.

In the Read folder you can choose which file you want to export.

Follow this procedure:

o select the chosen file
o click on the Save file button of the Toolbar
o save the file, Upload is the default folder
o choose whether to extract HEADER or not (YES / NO choice)

IF YOU CHOOSE NO: the file of the vehicle with HEADER will be saved in the folder. By following
this procedure during the writing of the modified file in the ECU, Genius will recognize the chosen file
as correct for the ECU because it will read the HEADER.

IF YOU CHOOSE YES: the file of the vehicle without HEADER will be saved in the folder and you
can then export it outside Race system. A HEADER in *.txt format including all the instructions about
the file read will also be saved in the same folder. By following this procedure during the writing of
the modified file in the ECU, New Genius will ask to confirm whether the file to be written is correct
because in that file New Genius will not find the HEADER.

APPENDIX ‘A’ (Specific procedures – Verification)

This additional function is available to face specific situations tied to the use of some protocols. Protocol
FLASH_0090 (OPEL diesel vehicles with BOSCH EDC16 ECUs), as example, does not allow the reading of
the original file from the stock ECU.
In this case, Genius will allow to certify the compatibility of the file stored into the ECU with the file supplied
with the corresponding setting file. This operation is called VERIFICATION of the compatibility of the file.
On some other vehicles, this function allows to avoid reading the file stored into the stock ECU
(FLASH_0056, FIAT/ALFA ROMEO diesel vehicles with BOSCH EDC16 ECUs), as the reading operation is
remarkably long.

It is important to read and follow the procedure here described:

1 - Perform the ID (Identification) of the software stored into the stock ECU, then find the corresponding
setting file according to the information obtained from the ID.
2 – Once the setting file is downloaded in Race EVO, export the .ORI file into Genius
3 – Connect Genius to the vehicle, then open (launch) the protocol (example FLASH_0090) as follow:
WorkVehiclesselect the correct manufacturer/model/type (engine) or
Work Protocols select the proper protocol
Click “VERIFICATION”

4 - Select the .ORI file (original) that you previously saved into \Write folder; click on the arrow to continue
and launch the procedure to verify the compatibility with the file into the ECU. It is always possible to
check and identify the file by clicking “i” (Information).

5 – Some messages to switch on-off the dashboard will appear, follow carefully the instructions and perform
these operations without hurry; then click to continue until the verification procedure is completed.

If the verification is confirmed, Genius will display an appropriate message to allow the modification from the
original file selected.

On the contrary, if the verification is not confirmed, the file selected and tested is not compatible with the
software stored into the stock ECU.
Perform again the VERIFICATION with a different file or find an alternative way to read the file stored into the
stock ECU (please contact our technical support in case of doubts).

APPENDIX ‘B’ (Specific procedures – Injectors codification)

Some protocols (like FLASH_0071, 0086, 0144, for Renault and Nissan diesel engines with Bosch
EDC16C0/C3 ECUs) have been implemented with a new feature allowing the injector re-codification after the
ECU modification.

To achieve a proper tuning intervention, it is mandatory to perform the reading and programming
operations when the engine is cold. Moreover, follow carefully the procedure here described:

1 – After connecting Genius to the OBDII socket, the first operation to do is the reading of injectors code.
Activate the specific protocol as described here:
WorkVehiclesselect the correct vehicle & engine or
Work Protocols select the proper protocol
Click “TOOL”, then perform READING of the injectors code.

2 – A window will show the information of the ECU, continue with the reading. Then you will have to save the
code file with a name.

Reading time normally is very

fast; in some cases les than 5
seconds.

3 – After reading the injectors code, it is possible to read the ECU file,
then export it into Race EVO to perform the modification and, after this
is completed, copy the file back into Genius so that to write it back into
the ECU.

4 – Follow the standard procedure to write files (as indicated in Chapter 9.3).
A message will appear once you chose the modified file to write:

WARNING:
It is necessary to read the injectors codes before writing the file! If
you did not do it, it is MANDATORY to abort this procedure by
clicking “CANCEL”, then restart the procedure from point 1 on.

If you read the injectors codes, you can click OK to continue.

Pag. 44/49
January 2018
USER MANUAL
Ver. 2.04

5 – Once the writing procedure of the modified file is started, follow carefully the messages about switching
on-off the dashboard. Genius will automatically perform a reading of the injector codes (this reading will be
stored into its RAM memory), then will perform the writing procedure.
Before completing this procedure, a message will be displayed:

Confirm OK and Genius will perform a new

codification of the injectors Once this operation is
completed, the following message will appear to
confirm and end the procedure.

WARNING
In the unlikely case that the communication is interrupted or blocked – and consequently the correct writing
of the new codification cannot be achieved by Genius, the vehicle engine might not start or – if started – be
into recovery mode.
In this case, a manual writing of the injectors code is required, by following this procedure.

1 – Open (enable) the serial protocol required by that vehicle. It can be done in these ways:
WorkVehiclesselect the correct vehicle & engine or
Work Protocols select the proper protocol
Select “TOOL”, then perform INJECT. CODIFY.

You will be asked to select the file of the injectors code, previously saved in folder \Cod.
If you are not sure about the file to write, please verify the correct identification software number or VIN
number by clicking “i” (Information).
Next, click on the arrow to continue and then “OK”

Once the writing procedure of the injector codification is

completed, a confirmation message will be displayed.

APPENDIX ‘C’ - VAG COUNTER RESET

“VAG COUNTER RESET” means the possibility to read and reset the counter of the programming
operations performed on the ECU via diagnostic socket. Currently this function is enabled for various
DIESEL models of VAG group, EDC16/16+ Bosch ECUs.
IMPORTANT: this is an optional feature not enabled by any contract; please contact our commercial
department in order to purchase it.

After selecting “WORK”, you can choose vehicles (manufacturer – model – type) or - if known – protocols
(specific for the ECU that is being tuned): SPECIALS  COUNTER

VISUALIZATION AND FIRST READING

In order to work on these counters, you will have to READ and WRITE a part of the FLASH and of the
MICROPROCESSOR. The same file (modified with a PATCH) will be written by Genius to activate the
counter modification mode.

Pag. 46/49
January 2017
HANDBOOK
Ver.1.2

Click OK to start the reading procedure and follow carefully the instructions given by Genius to switch on,
then off, the dashboard. Next, input the name of the file.

FIRST WRITING

As previously pointed out, it is required to program a part of the FLASH and of the MICROPROCESSOR with
a PATCH to activate the counter modification mode. Thus, click WRITING from menu Counters, select the
file previously read, set the value COUNTER programming operation SUCCESSFULLY performed and
select OK. The counter of the ATTEMPTED programming operation will be automatically aligned with the
SUCCESSFULLY performed counter.

Set the counters as whished with the arrows UP/DOWN, confirm OK and follow the instructions.
Warning: the procedure involves up to 4 “switch on-switch off” dashboard operations: please perform these
operations without hurry, waiting for 8/10 seconds before confirming OK on Genius.

HANDBOOK
Ver.1.2

VISUALIZATION AND FURTHER MODIFICATIONS

If - after a first modification of the “counters” - a new set is required, you will not need to restart the procedure
and add a patch again. Genius can identify the already existing patch in the microprocessor, so it will
immediately enable the possibility to reset the counter in “READING” menu.

In this case, the writing operations will be faster and a single sequence of “switch on-switch off” will be
enough.

COUNTERS  RECOVERY

This function allows to RECOVERY the writing procedure in a situation of emergency by means of a forced
writing.
ALWAYS CONTACT our technical support BEFORE performing this operation.
As example, should the writing operation of the patch in the microprocessor go wrong, this recovery function
would allow the correct writing of the file.
This forced writing operation allows to write the ORIGINAL file in the microprocessor, without PATCH
allowing the counter modification mode.
If after this RECOVERY operation a new set of the counter is required, it will be enough to restart the
procedure as described in this appendix, considering the ECU as original (please go back to reading and first
writing).
