Task: To create your own thirteen to twenty song mixtape compilation, which you feel represents the music and artists that we have
studied in this course. You can arrange them in any order that you want.
Instructions:
1. Include a brief introduction in your compilation which explains the theme or rationale of your disc. In your introduction, explain the
order of your songs and how they fit together. In particular, focus on the first and last song of your compilation.
2. For each song explain why you included the song, why it appeals to you and why it would appeal to other people.
3. For each song explain what musical genre it fits in and how it fits in to the history of Hiphop.
4. For each song, provide some brief background information on the artist you have chosen. Show how and where the album fits in the
artist’s career.
6. You must use at least seven different subgenres of Hiphop music (for example: Pioneers of Hiphop, Golden Age of Hiphop, Gangsta Rap,
Conscious Rap, Alternative Hiphop, Canadian Hiphop, Southern Hiphop, Global Hiphop, British Hiphop and New Millennium Hiphop) .

Welcome to an audio journey into the dynamic world of hip-hop! I will introduce "Global Grooves", a mixtape, that will bring listeners on a
historical tour through thirteen major subgenres, highlighting the genre’s dynamic reach and worldwide reach. The mixtape evolves like a
historical record. We start with the enthusiasm of the Hiphop Pioneers, as demonstrated with “Rapper's Delight” by The Sugarhill Gang. This
classic song begins the mixtape and sets up a starting point for exploring other subgenres that developed from that core sound. The journey
will take the listeners through multiple genres of hip-hop and show its evolution through time and space. At the end of this mixtape, the
listeners will experience New Millennium Hiphop with “Empire State of Mind” by Jay-Z ft. Alicia Keys. This classic song represents the genre's
constant growth, maintaining its cultural influence while embracing creative production.
"Global Grooves" begins off with the sizzling energy of "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang. This revolutionary song, consisting of its
simple rhythms and cheerful delivery, is the birth and the foundation of Hip Hop, with a bunch of different new sounds to come. This song is
a universal classic, and it can be accessed by anyone. It has historical significance as the first commercially successful Hip Hop song.
Moving to the Golden Age, “The Message” by Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five demonstrates how hip-hop can talk about social
awareness. This track raises the concerns and issues of poverty and social inequality with listeners who see themselves in this. Grandmaster
Flash, the DJ and the turntable genius upgrades the art, and the rapping by the Furious Five earns them a spot among the most essential
figures in Hip Hop. "The Message" became a pioneer of the genre, marking the genre's evolution.

"California Love" by 2Pac ft. Dr. Dre features the soft and laid-back West Coast style with its melodic production and cool catch hook. This
iconic track highlights the rise of West Coast rappers and their unique storytelling approach. The collaboration between two of the most
iconic figures of that time, 2Pac and Dr. Dre, defined the G-Funk sound with its signature features. "California Love" made West Coast rap
the top and led to the East Coast rap being no more dominant in the 90s.
"Let Your Backbone Slide" by Maestro Fresh Wes is the classical Canadian Hip Hop energy injected into the mixtape. This song might have a
similar tune to the one that spreads all over the country and was the contribution of a Canadian music style. "Let Your Backbone Slide" was
the first Canadian Hip Hop song to have a gold certification in 1989. Maestro Fresh Wes, a Toronto rapper, opened doors for other artists in
the making as he leads with the iconic song that portrays the unique character of Canadian Hip Hop.
" Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik" by OutKast showcases the different shades of Southern Hip-Hop with its joyful sound experimentation.
The track incorporates sounds of funk, soul, and southern style productions while highlighting the uniqueness of the genre. OutKast, a
classic duo from Atlanta, Georgia in the South, and paved the way for Dirty South and experimented with their music, inspiring many others.
“Kim” by Eminem addresses personal and inner problems like mental illness with the signature dark and intense tones, altering shared
borders between Conscious rap, and Shock rap. This track features artists putting their introspective topics on the line by taking
controversial stands and generating heated debate. Eminem, one of the rapper legends from the streets of Detroit, became famous with his
aggressive lyrical style and controversial persona, taking over the modern rap scene.

Dizzee Rascal's "Bonkers" brings the mixtape energy with a specific reference to British Hip Hop which is part of grime sub-genre. This track
brings the unique style of Grime, with Dizzee Rascal's intense beat, driven by a complex drum pattern and rap delivery at a remarkable rate.
The upbeat and the rhyme behind "Bonkers" make it impossible to resist the catchy melody and the fan will be impressed. In 2003,
"Bonkers" became a massive hit which saw both Dizzee Rascal and Grime getting introduced to a larger audience, and played a role in
Daddy Yankee's infectious "Gasolina" infuses the mixtape with the vibrant energy of Reggaeton, showcasing the global reach and cross-
cultural influences that define Hip Hop's evolution beyond geographical borders. Daddy Yankee, a Puerto Rican rapper, is a pioneer of
Reggaeton, a genre that blends Hip Hop, Caribbean music, and Latin rhythms. "Gasolina" became a global hit, demonstrating the genre's
"Electric Relaxation" is a song performed by A Tribe Called Quest in 1990, and it that add underground and alternative hip hop to the
mixtape. This track is special because it mixes up the jazzy samples, introspective lyrics, and a smooth rapping style with the mainstream hip
hop. This track provided a foundation for alternative hip hop to be recognized on the charts, and many following artists emulated the details
of its content and infused the positive message. The Tribe Called Quest Group, which includes Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, and Jarobi White, along
with DJ Ali Shaheed Muhammad, made their mark as the most powerful groups in the hip-hop world.

Queen Latifah's "U.N.I.T.Y." in 1988 is a great example of the role of women rappers in hip hop. This track does not simply have a good
melody, but it also addresses significant social issues. Lady Latifah, who was known as the first female hip hop artist, appeals to her audience
with the gender sensitive lyrics and allows girls to stake the same message to the power of boys. "U.N.I.T.Y" created these necessary
conversations in rap music as it rewrote the rule book and reached far beyond the genre. Latah's career in music, acting, and television had
strengthened how she impacted the entertainment industry. "U.N.I.T.Y." made a hit in 1989 and was the turning point of her career that has
been an example for scores of female rappers and artists till now.
"Hey Boy, Hey Girl" by The Chemical Brothers featuring The Flaming Lips & Betty Carter (1999) brings some element of surprise to our
mixtape. This track phenomenally showcases what this fusion of genres can do, that is, push the boundaries of reggae and hip-hop fusion
beyond all imaginations. However, the song did not become an absolute hit, it still immortalized in the critics, enthusiasts, and experimental
"m.A.A.d City" by Kendrick Lamar redefined West Coast Rap, as he creates a complex narrative about gang violence, poverty and personal
struggles in an iconic G-Funk soundscape. This track demonstrates Kendrick's lyrical maturity and ability to speak about social problems in
frank, direct language, cementing his place as a leading artist in the contemporary Hip Hop scene. Growing up in Compton, Kendrick entered
the music scene in the late 2000s while adopting a conscious and introspective approach to hip-hop exemplified by the artists from the West

Coast who pioneered the style, but also adding a distinct voice of his own to it. "m.A.A.d City" is the track of the album "good kid, m.A.A.d
City" which Kendrick Lamar is widely recognized as a prominent musician, since the album was critically appraised.
"Empire State of Mind" performed by JAY-Z & Alicia Keys closes the mixtape, summing up New Millennium Hip Hop in the finish. This
legendary track has pioneering production, a creative process of collaboration, and concentrating on an individual`s ventures as a sign of the
genre's development and mass appeal. Jay-Z, a hip-hop artist and businessman from Brooklyn, is a hip-hop star who is probably among the
biggest influencers in the genre. "Empire State of Mind" displays how he can fill his lyrics with contemplative narration and then top the
melodic line with catchiness, and the diva voice of Alicia Keys serves as an additional musical detail. This track, which was released on Jay-Z's
third album "The Blueprint 3", gave him more the opportunity not only to prove but also to show that he was an icon of culture as well as
successful businessman.
