Assignment of gravitation

Section A: Conceptual Questions (10 Questions)

1. Define gravitational force. How does it depend on the masses of objects and the
distance between them?
2. What is the difference between mass and weight? How is weight related to gravitational
force?
3. Why does the value of acceleration due to gravity vary from place to place on the
Earth’s surface?
4. Explain why astronauts feel weightless in a space station even though gravity is acting
on them.
5. What is free fall? Why does an object in free fall not experience any air resistance?
6. State Newton’s Universal Law of Gravitation and express it mathematically.
7. If the mass of the Earth were to double, how would the weight of an object on the
Earth’s surface change?
8. What is the significance of the value of G (gravitational constant)? Is it the same
everywhere in the universe?
9. Explain why the moon does not fall towards the Earth even though the Earth exerts a
gravitational force on it.
10. How does the force of gravity between two objects change if the distance between
them is tripled?

Section B: Short Numerical Questions (10 Questions)

11. Calculate the gravitational force between two masses of 10 kg and 20 kg placed 2
meters apart. (G = 6.674 × 10⁻¹¹ N m²/kg²)

12. A 5 kg object is placed on the surface of the Earth. Find its weight (Take g = 9.8
m/s²).
13. The Earth has a mass of 5.97 × 10²⁴ kg and the Moon has a mass of 7.35 × 10²² kg.
The distance between them is 3.84 × 10⁸ meters. Calculate the gravitational force
between the Earth and the Moon.
14. If an object weighs 60 N on Earth, what will be its weight on the Moon, where gravity
is about 1/6th of Earth’s gravity?
15. Calculate the gravitational force between two masses of 500 kg and 800 kg placed 10
meters apart.
16. An object of mass 50 kg is taken to a planet where the acceleration due to gravity is
12 m/s². Calculate its weight on that planet.
17. If a satellite orbits the Earth at a height where the acceleration due to gravity is 7.5
m/s², calculate the weight of a 100 kg object in that orbit.
18. Find the mass of an object that weighs 98 N on the Earth’s surface (g = 9.8 m/s²).
19. If the gravitational force between two objects is 50 N when they are 1 m apart, what
will be the force when the distance between them is reduced to 0.5 m?

20. The radius of the Earth is approximately 6.4 × 10⁶ meters. Calculate the gravitational
acceleration at a height of 640 km above the Earth’s surface. (Hint: g varies inversely with
the square of the distance from the Earth’s center).

Section C: Long Numerical Questions (5 Questions)

21. The mass of a planet is 5 times that of Earth, and its radius is 3 times that of Earth.
What is the acceleration due to gravity on this planet if g on Earth is 9.8 m/s²?
22. A 70 kg astronaut travels to a planet where the mass of the planet is 8 times that of
Earth, and the radius is 2 times that of Earth. Calculate the astronaut’s weight on the new
planet.
23. Two masses, 15 kg and 25 kg, are placed at a distance of 5 meters from each other.
Calculate the gravitational force between them and state how the force would change if the
distance is doubled.

24. A 1000 kg satellite is orbiting the Earth at a distance of 2 × 10⁷ meters from the
center of the Earth. If the mass of the Earth is 5.97 × 10²⁴ kg, calculate the gravitational
force acting on the satellite.
25. The mass of the Sun is approximately 1.99 × 10³⁰ kg and the mass of the Earth is
5.97 × 10²⁴ kg. The distance between them is approximately 1.5 × 10¹¹ meters. Calculate
the gravitational force between the Sun and the Earth.
