From the beginning of God’s revelation, after the Fall of Man, God promised his power of mercy and compassion to all
of us his creatures. He has sent Jesus to us to be our brother and Savior. He likewise invites us to show mercy to our
least brothers and sisters in society. St. Luke gives us the mind of God concerning mercy and compassion.

The Rich Man and Lazarus

Luke 16:19-31

Once there was a rich man who dressed in purple and fine linen and feasted every day. At his gate lay
Lazarus, a poor man covered with sores, who longed to eat just the scraps falling from the rich man’s table.
Even dogs used to come and lick his sores. It happened that the poor man died and angels carried him to take
his place and was buried. From hell where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham afar off and
with him Lazarus at rest. He called out: ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus with the tip of
his finger dipped in water to cool my tongue, for I suffer so much in this fire.’ Abraham replied: ‘My son,
remember that in your lifetime you were well-off while the lot of Lazarus was misfortune. Now he is in
comfort and you are in agony. But that is not all. Between your place and ours a great chasm has been fixed,
so that no one can cross over from here to you or from your side to us.’ The rich man implored once more:
‘Then I beg you, Father Abraham, to send Lazarus to my father’s house where my five brothers live. Let him
warn them so that they may not end up in this place of torment.’ Abraham replied: ‘They have Moses and the
prophets. Let the listen to them.’ But the rich man said: ‘No Father Abraham. But if someone from the dead
goes to them, they will repent.’ Abraham said: ‘If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not
be convinced even if someone rises from the grave.’

☞ Answer the following questions:

1. What is the gospel story all about?

______________________________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________________________
2. How is mercy and compassion emphasized?

The Gospel story is not new to us. It speaks of the gap between the rich and the poor in society. In the heart of Jesus, the
poor finds favor. The rich man went to hell not because he is rich but because of being insensitive to the needs of the poor.
Nowadays, people are learning to be concerned and be open-hearted to those who are suffering and needy, thus
experiencing the mercy and compassion of God.

The Paschal Mystery of Jesus is commemorated and celebrated in the Church from the earliest centuries of Christianity until
His Parousia or second and definitive coming at the end of time. In the Church’ Liturgy, Jesus’ shares His desire to remain
with His Body the Church who is on pilgrimage to eternity. A sure companion in the journey to the eternal Kingdom is our
Lord and Savior Jesus, who is presented to us in the Gospel according to Luke as One filled with compassion, tenderness,
forgiveness.

The Gospel according to Luke shows how the promise of God to Israel have been fulfilled in Jesus and has been extended to
the Gentiles. Luke presents that the preaching and teaching of the disciples of the Early Church are based on the preaching
and teaching of Jesus, handed on to the chosen followers were given the mission to be the witnesses of His resurrection,
including everything that He did.

JESUS IN THE GOSPEL OF LUKE:

Jesus Christ is the Savior of men, who is full of compassion, tenderness, and abounding in forgiveness. The truth emphasized
by Luke is about Jesus as the Messiah and the bearer of the Holy Spirit.

CONTENTS OF THE GOSPEL OF LUKE:

Luke’s emphasis is not so much on “Parousia” but concerning each day of the Christian community. Luke believes in
Parousia but presents the words and deeds of Jesus as guides for the conduct of the Christian disciples between His
Ascension to Parousia, thus making Jesus as the model of Christian life and piety.

1. Universalism: The gospel is not only for Israel but for all people even to the Gentiles.

2. The Savior of Compassion and Mercy: Luke calls all Christian disciples to identify or model themselves on
the Master Jesus, who is caring, tender, towards the lowly and the poor, rejected, afflicted, outcasts, the
sinners, and to recognize all those who are dependent on God.

3. Gospel of Justice: Jesus is severe toward the proud and self-righteous, especially those who place their
wealth and possession before the service of God and neighbor.

4. Gospel of the Spirit: The role of the Spirit in the life of Jesus and the Christian disciples. The
conception of Jesus, His whole public ministry, all His words and works are motivated by the Spirit. The
Spirit which moved the Messiah is also poured on His Church.

5. Gospel of Prayer: Jesus Himself gives the supreme example of prayer. Luke speaks of the prayer of Jesus in
eight (8) more circumstances.

6. Luke on Women: He pays special attention to women because at that time women were degraded.
7. Repentance and Forgiveness: Because Jesus is a Savior of forgiveness, the preaching of repentance of
sins is emphasized to all nations.

8. Gospel of the Poor: Jesus is particularly demanding of His disciples to be totally detached from
family and material possessions. Luke made warnings about the danger of riches in the aspect of
selfishness; he insists on the renunciation of wealth in Life of Divine Providence. To share one’s
wealth and riches to the poor is the positive aspect of being poor like Jesus who lived among the poor.
9. Gospel of Joy and Peace: Luke is keenly aware about the joy of the coming Savior. He stated twenty
(20) references for joy at the gift of peace of Jesus’ coming into the world for salvation. Those who
have a close and personal union with Jesus in prayer are blessed to have peace and joy.
