IN
—
B screens of the amazing "Robots in Disguise" TRANSFORMERS! A new concept in toy
development had arrived in the West, and nothing would ever be the same again.
Essentially, TRANSFORMERS were two were robots that, with a few twists
toys in one. They
and turns, became cars, jet fighters, trucks, weapons and, in one notable case, a radio-
cassette player (complete with mini-TRANSFORMER tapes!). But what made these new toys
stand out was that each pack came complete with detailed information on the character:
his strengths and weaknesses, aims and ideals. And more... a whole back-story detailed a
civil war on the metal planet of Cybertron, sweeping intergalactic combat, sudden disaster,
and a dramatic reawakening on Earth. Heroic Autobots, led by noble Optimus Prime, pitted
themselves against Megatron's evil Decepticons! For a generation nurtured on Star Wars
and Battlestar Galactica, it was just the ticket.
In fact, in Japan, transforming robot toys were nothing new. The TRANSFORMERS line was
initially modeled on molds and characters from Takara, a major Japanese toy
existing
manufacturer, reissued under license by Hasbro in the United States and elsewhere. Hasbro
developed the larger concepts, including character names and biographies, in collaboration
with the U.S. comics publisher, Marvel (and in particular writer/editor Bob Budiansky], paving
the way for a comic-book series and animated TV show, both of which proved hugely popular.
My involvement began in1985. Marvel Comics' UK subsidiary had launched its own
TRANSFORMERS title, and, while it largely reprinted stories from the US comic, the
necessity soon arose for UK-originated material. Enter novice scriptwriter stage left. My first
TRANSFORMERS story, titled "The Enemy Within," was published in March 1985, and one
way or another been involved in the evolving world of TRANSFORMERS ever since.

In fact, the truly amazing thing about TRANSFORMERS is that it has endured for such a long
time. It's come and gone, sure, but it keeps reinventing itself for a new generation, at the
same time keeping fans who grew up with the series completely involved.
TRANSFORMERS in the 21st century has ever been, with new concepts,
is as strong as it
new toys, new comics, a new TV show, and a huge fanbase that tracks and discusses each
new development on a host of dedicated websites, or journeys from far and wide to
sprawling conventions. Prepare to be amazed all over again....

THE
the founding characters and stories that shaped the saga
of Cybertron and its warring inhabitants. Over the course
of Generation 1 , the battle spread to Earth and beyond, the
core characters evolved into bigger, more sophisticated
robot forms, and a host of new robots joined the fray.
The saga has spawned many
inconsistencies and divergent
storylines, but now, at last,
the one true history can
be revealed.

THE CITY OF IACON
CYBERTRON'S HUB-CAPITAL, Iacon, extends
across the planet's northern polar region. When
Cybertronian society began to flourish in the golden
age, Iacon was founded and established as the primary
seat of government. High science and ancient mysticism
merged seamlessly around and throughout its gleaming
towers and domes, underpinning the dreams and
ambitions of this new race. Though much of the planet's
history had become lost, a few older TRANSFORMERS
formed the High Council with the goal to preserve
Primus' guiding intent of a vast, unified world inhabited by
a species dedicated to universal peace.

Only the strongest and deadliest were allowed into
Megatron's inner Decepticon circle. Once recruited,
they were indoctrinated and, if necessary,
reconfigured and made ready for war. Then, on the
State Day of Cycle 1 1010, the Decepticons struck
on multiple fronts. Unprepared, unversed in the ways
of war, many chose not to resist. They pleaded for
mercy, only to find that Megatron had none to give!

stole a Golden Disk, which revealed the location of a planet
brimming with natural energon fields. But Megatron's plans did
not stop there. The planet on which he had set his sights was
Earth, and its prehistory held the key to ultimate power.
Predacons
The Predacons rose out of the ashes of
—
the defeated Decepticons, but left with little
or no energon and relatively few in number
they had no choice but to accept Maximal
terms for surrender. In the years following the
end of the Great War, the Predacons rebuilt
their power base, their ruling Tri-Predacus
Council secretly preparing for a new war to
reclaim Cybertron. But the Tri-Predacus
Council was willing to bide its time, and would
not tolerate a rogue force such as Megatron.
BEAST MODE
Megatron strikes with all the thunderous power
and rage of his prehistoric proto-model, the
T-Rex. His former mobile battle-base mode

PREDACONS
PREDACONS HAVE THE same capacity for tyranny and
treachery as Decepticons: always looking for trouble and
ready to stab Megatron in the back. The core Predacons
comprise chaos-causing Scorponok and Terrorsaur, traitorous
Tarantulas and Blackarachnia, and loyal but luckless

Tank Drone
The basic Tank Drone toy (though smaller than the earlier "mega" Tankor variant)
has many points of articulation and exciting design elements, and is far closer to
the eventual CG-representation of both. Tank modes have always been popular with
fans, and the Drone's cannon feature is big, detailed, and comes with a firing
missile. The firing angle of the cannon can be varied, and it has an upward-pointing,
nonoffensive position. The tank mode has an action feature: holding down the Spark
Crystal and moving it forward makes the cannon spin and fire.

Battle Unicorn
Part of the Battle of the Spark line, a range of Beast Machines toys

to the limited numbers produced. The toy gained a wider audience
and appreciation when it was reissued. Classed as a Maximal Scout
Warrior, Battle Unicorn's tech specs list extra features such as
silent-approach hooves, teleportation, and radar-invisible armor.

The second six-issue series was written
by Brad Mick. Entitled War and Peace,
it pulled in much more G1 continuity.
The action takes place on Cybertron,

Shockwave has ended the civil war,

The task of retro-designing the G1 TRANSFORMERS in their pre-Earth

Plucked from a variety of alternate Cybertrons and timelines,
Unicron's five heralds are almost, but not quite, characters
we've met before. Though not named, they are versions of G1

Artists Don Figueroa and Guido Guidi made subtle changes to
each, making them distinct from the core G1 characters.
