(65). 1712 Death of Bahadur Shah , after ruling for 5 years. 1720 Bengal became independent. 1724 Deccan became an independent state. 1738 The Marathas took over modern day eastern Madhya Pradesh , southeastern Rajasthan and west central India 1739 The peacock throne was stolen by the Persians – Nadir shah who also fought against the Empire and captured Muhammad Shah (emperor) 1748 Civil wars broke out and Sindh , Oudh , Gujarat and many other provinces broke away from the Mughal Empire . The British also set up their trade. 16th Century Portuguese started trading in India. 17th Century The Dutch had the strongest navy and challenged the Portuguese . Century 1640 Madras was named a presidency. 1660 King Charles II married Catherine , and Bombay was gifted to the British. 1664 The French East India Company (Compagnie Des Indes) started. 1661 Bombay becomes a British presidency (years not included in book). 1690 Calcutta becomes a British presidency. 1697 Work for Fort William Started. 1700 1000 Britishers lived at Calcutta. 1717 Madras had 360 sepoys / soldiers. 1730 French East India Company increased in trade and expanded in Bengal , under Francois Dupleix. 1740 British were well established on the west and east coasts of India. 1740 England earned more than 10% of its annual income. 1742 Madras’s sepoys/soldiers increased to 1,200. 1742 Dupleix was appointed as Governor – General of all Indian French settlements. 1746 The French sent a fleet of ships to Madras , captured it but the British were able to re take it from them. YEAR EVENT 1750 Calcutta had a population of half a million / 500,000 people. 1751 A war broke out between the French company and the British Company, specifically against Muhammad Ali and Chanda Sahib. 1751 Clive captured Arcot from the French / Chanda Sahib’s son. This was also Robert Clive’s first victory. 1752 - June The French surrendered , Chanda Sahib was executed, and Dupleix was recalled to France where he died in poverty. Muhammad Ali Khan became nawab of Carnatic. 1756 Bengal was ruled by Siraj ud Daulah – 19-year-old nawab. 1756 – June Siraj ud Daulah , marched to Fort William with 50,000 men. Jhon Z Holwell became senior officer in command and the British had to surrender. 1756 - October The British re-took Calcutta and captured Chandernagore. 1757 – June Start of the Battle of Plassey against Siraj ud Daulah at Plassey house , which the British won after the betrayal of Mir Jafar. 1757 – June Clive set up Plassey house as his head quarters. 22nd 1757 – June Siraj ud Daulah and his wife fled Bengal. 24th 1757 – June Mir Jafar (Siraj’s Cousin) was made the nawab of Bengal. 29th 1757 – July 2nd Siraj ud Daulah was caught and executed .(Month and Day not mentioned in book) 1757 Bengal was captured under British rule. 1758 Robert Clive became governor General of Bengal. 1759 Shah Alam II became the Mughal Emperor. 1759 The Dutch sent a fleet of ships against the British but lost the battle. 1760 Mir Qasim became the nee nawab of Bengal and allied with Shah Alam against the British. 1761 The British captured Pondicherry , and the French Government stopped financing the French East India Company and its merchants had to move to west indies for more profitable trade. 1764 The Battle of Buxar took place between the Mughals and The British . The Mughals lost , marking the start of the British rule in India. 1815 The British and French rivalry subsided / stopped. 1834 Persian remained the official language. 1835 The official language was changed from Persian to English .
