WORK
I. Introductory Concept

Everyday people work for one reason or another. They exert force and energy in
working. What comes to your mind when you hear the word “work”?

What is your work? It refers to a job or employment. When people say, “I’ll meet you
after work…,” they refer it to a part of the day devoted to an occupation or undertaking.
When your teacher asks, “Have you done your homework?,” this refers to a task or activity
needed to be accomplished. But in Science, “work” has its own meaning.

Work is done if the force exerted on the

object results to displacement (motion with
direction). There is work (as shown in Figures 1 and
3) since the applied force and displacement are
in the same direction. In Figure 2, no work is done
since the force exerted by the boy did not make
the object move in the same direction of the
applied force.

Calculating Work

Work is done when the force (F) applied to the object causes the object to have a
displacement (d) in the same direction as the force applied. The symbol for work is
W. The work done by a force can be calculated as W = F x d. And the unit of work
is Joule. 1
II. Learning Skills/Competency:

Identify and explain the factors that affect potential and kinetic energy (S8FE-Ia-
17)

III. Activities
Part I. Knowing if work is Done or Not

Direction: Put a check (√) if the statement tells that work is done or a cross (X) if it is
not done on the space provided. Please see examples below.

Example A. A boy is sitting on a chair while reading his book

___√__ Force is applied
__ X __Displacement of object is in the direction of the applied force
__ X __Work is done

Example B. A carpenter is lifting a hammer

___√___Force is applied
___√__ Displacement of object is in the direction of the applied force
___√__ Work is done
Start here:
a. The king is walking across the aisle with his crown on his head.
_____ Force is applied
_____Displacement of object is in the direction of the applied force
_____Work is done

b. The children are watching their favorite movie.

_____ Force is applied
__ ___Displacement of object is in the direction of the applied force
_____Work is done

c. A swing is carrying a boy moving back and forth.

_____ Force is applied
__ ___Displacement of object is in the direction of the applied force
_____Work is done

d. An object is lifted to a certain height.

_____ Force is applied
__ ___Displacement of object is in the direction of the applied force
_____Work is done

e. A man is pushing a big narra tree

_____ Force is applied
__ ___Displacement of object is in the direction of the applied force
_____Work is done

Part II. Calculating the amount of work done.

Read the following problems carefully and calculate the amount of work done.

Example: Suppose a man applies a force of 50 Newton (N) to push a cart and move
it across a distance of 10 m, what is the amount of work done by the man?

Given: F = 50 N
d = 10 m
Unknown: W = ?

Formula: W = F x d

Solution: W = 50 N x 10 m

W = 500 N.m since N.m = Joule of J

Answer: W= 500 J

1. You pulled your bag through a 2. An object was pushed by a force of

distance of 3 m. You exerted a force of 400 N and moved to a distance of 6 m.
