Good day, today, me Javian Noah Guliman, and my fellow researchers Andre Jacob Bugarin,

Kerby Felix, and James Daniel Real will be presenting Chapter 1 and of our research paper,
with the research title called Melody to the Brain: Impact of Music on Academic Performance of
Junior High School Students in St. Mary’s College of Meycauayan.

To formally commence the presentation of our study, I will use the acronym BEAT to further
explain the elements of the introduction part of the current study.

As we all know music is everywhere and it is pretty much indispensable to the lives of others.
Music has been around since the dawn of man. So, let's explore first the first element which is
the background.

Music is understood to possess a significant influence on our mood, emotion and behavior,
which was a concept stated by a researcher who has an expertise in the field of music named
Kenneth K. Freedom. His understanding of music was tested and supported by many
researchers which has been one of many driving points that has encouraged us to follow this
topic. Furthermore, throughout the years as technology progressed, many more people around
the world have been into the music listening hobby and this included students like us becoming
part of this phenomena which was caused by our interest and curiosity.

Music has a lot of effects on an individual, and it can typically be positive or negative. In our
study, we want to further analyze and inspect what the effects music has on the Junior High
School students’ academic performance. Related studies show that music has a potential
benefit that has affected the performance of students drastically in terms of their academic
performance such as improved memory, increased attention, in addition providing inspiration
and motivation among students that have helped them to learn effectively. However, these
positive effects can be somewhat misleading as some studies concluded that music can be a
distraction to other students and it can serve as a nuisance to an individual which is typically
dependent on one’s personal preferences and the context of an ongoing circumstance. Because
of these two differing perspectives that make it hard to acknowledge on what the effect of music
really is

This leads us to the next point, the aim of our study. Our study aims to analyze and investigate
the intricate relationship between listening to music and academic performance. To
contextualize, we will be tackling the Junior High School level in our school St. Mary’s College
of Meycauayan to investigate whether music has a possibility to become a benefit for academic
purposes. It aims to delve whether listening to music really has a positive or negative or both
effects on academic performance? In addition, as the researchers of this study, it is our goal to
inspire fellow co-Ignacian Marians to explore and adopt an effective strategy in incorporating
music into their educational process, aiming to support and enhance the students' academic
performance.

Lastly, our study is an ongoing trend and a universal habit. It is common to see students walking
around with their brand new AirPods and jamming with their favorite music or it is common to
see students wearing headphones while doing cognitive tasks such as reading or writing in
order for them to be productive. This has been a universal habit because many students around
the world have been doing this! This trend of students listening to music while studying is not
merely a random one-hit wonder trend, but it has been happening for a long time now and it has
become a phenomenon that has become a part of the academic landscape.
