As a future teacher, what classroom management strategies do I need to employ to respond to

diverse types of learners?

In today’s time, the classrooms are becoming more diverse, encompassing students from

different cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds with different learning styles,

personality, behavior, and skills and talents. Because of this, the traditional one-size-fits-all

classroom management seems to be ineffective in creating a supportive and inclusive

classroom. As a teacher, it is our duty to be flexible in order for us to be able to provide a

conducive learning environment for them, hence the employment of different classroom

management strategies that cater to diverse learners is greatly encouraged and is highly

necessary.

First and foremost, I would set clear, consistent rules, routines, and expectations from the

very start. It is because of these shared, socially scripted patterns of behavior that students

have less behavior issues caused by the unknown because they understand what is expected

of them. These also reduce the cognitive complexity of the classroom (Leinhardt et al., 1987).

Another strategy that I would employ in my classroom is the use of differentiated

instruction partnered with culturally-responsive teaching. Differentiated instruction is an

approach of tailoring instructions to student’s needs. This offers students choices about how

they learn and how they can attain their learning goals (Southern Illinois University

Edwardsville, 2023). Partnering this with culturally-responsive teaching, I can provide

instructions while also giving them opportunities to acknowledge or be aware of and learn

the different cultures among them.

Everyone would love praises and rewards, especially kids. This makes them feel good about

themselves, hence increasing their motivation to do good—or better—for their next

performance or product as well as encouraged executing the same behavior that you desired

from them that resulted from them receiving that specific praise or reward. Due to this, one

of the classroom management strategies that I would employ is the use of positive

reinforcement.

Lastly, I would employ the use of flexible grouping and cooperative learning. In flexible

grouping, students are grouped together based on their individual needs, abilities, and

interests rather than solely based on their grade level or age. This allows personalized

instruction, increases student engagement, and improves social-emotional outcomes (Wahl,

2023). On the other hand, cooperative learning involves students working together in small

groups to accomplish shared goals or complete group tasks. Its effects include greater

motivation and achievement and better outcomes for students (Gillies, 2020).

With all these classroom management strategies employed inside the classroom, I wish to

create a learning environment for my future students where diversity is acknowledged and

celebrated.
