In 1981, the University of Dhaka (DU) established Renewable Energy Research Centre (RERC) for advanced
research, development and technical knowledge dissemination. In 2011, RERC was converted to Institute of
Renewable Energy and launched the MS in Renewable Energy Technology program. It was renamed as
Institute of Energy (IE) in 2013 to extend the scope of education and research on energy.
IE offers MS, MPhil and PhD degree programs. The MRET is a regular MS program and has 45 credits, 35
credits of theoretical course work and 10 credits of laboratory and research work. The program extends over 3
semesters (6 months/semester, total 1.5 years), 15-week classes per semester and open for undergraduates
against 40 seats. The MS program students will not avail DU hall accommodation privilege.
Eligibility of application
Students who have a minimum CGPA 2.5 out of 4.0 4-year BSc (Hons.) or 3-year BSc (Hons.) with 1-year
MSc/MS in
Physics, Applied Physics, Electronics and Communication Engineering
Mathematics, Chemistry, Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Bio-Science
Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Electronics and Communications Engineering, Electronics and
Telecommunication Engineering
Computer Science and Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Textile Engineering, Civil Engineering
Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Renewable Energy Technology, Energy
Technology
Earth , Soil and Environmental Science and Technology
Leather Technology, Petroleum Technology
Geology, Geography, IT, MIS, Economics, Disaster management and related fields.
Selection of Candidates
Admission committee will select students based on their merits in an admission test (MCQ) of 100 marks in
one and half an hour. In the test, 5 subjects: English language, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and General
Science will be the considered with equal emphasis. The minimum qualifying mark in the written test is 40
and the position of the students obtaining equal total marks will be determined by giving priority on the marks
of Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry and General Science, respectively.

Degree Requirements
For a degree in MS in Renewable Energy Technology (MRET), a student needs to complete the program within
3 years with minimum grade D in all courses.
Others
The IE authority will resolve any other issues not mentioned in this document. Application for admission
implies agreeing to abide by all rules and regulations of DU and the future decisions of the IE, DU. This
brochure is a part of course regulation.
