PART I

Brief about the Organization

As a voluntary, professional, non-political, and non-religious citizens group based in

Chennai, India, CAG was established on October 7, 1985. The founding trustee was
S. Govind Swaminadhan, a lawyer and former Advocate General of the State of
Tamil Nadu. Shyamala Nataraj, a development journalist with the South India Aids
Action Program, and Sriram Panchu, a Senior Advocate, were among our initial
trustees. S. Guhan was the former Finance Secretary of the Government of Tamil
Nadu. S.L. Rao was the former Chairman of the Central Electricity Regulatory
Commission. Citizen consumer and civic Action Group (CAG) is a non-profit, non-
political and professional organisation that works towards protecting citizens' rights
in consumer and environmental issues and promoting good governance processes
including transparency, accountability and participatory decision-making.

Observations made during the Internship

I understood firstly how the corporate world actually functions. I personally did not have to
work as much as my colleagues as I was the intern but still the amount of work I got was
tiresome. As I worked at an consumer protection NGO my work was limited to my desk. I
saw my Boss deal with consumer issues quite easily. I observed it’s not important to only
protect the consumers after any issue arises but even before by issuing advisories.

Your Experience during the Training

I gained skills in interpersonal communication and relationship-building at work. I learned
how to introduce myself, talk about my interests, knowledge, and skills with business owners,
ask questions, and gain a better understanding of businesses in the market as well as those in
the co-working space. Overall, this process helped me build my professional network and
made it clear how important it is to make connections. I learned that it's important to be
enthusiastic and willing to learn new skills, to request more work, and to be curious about
learning and asking questions. This attitude will demonstrate that you are eager to assist and
that you enjoy being a part of the team. If you are curious and enthusiastic, you will also get a
lot out of your internship, which opens up a lot of opportunities.
Executive Summary
During this period of 4 weeks I’ve had a lot to learn. In the first week I learnt writing
Consumer Complaint letters to the service provides, Made Posters relating to consumer rights
to, wrote articles on deficiency in service and medical negligence where I have explained
what really the terms mean and have cited relevant cases to explain the topic, the articles
were comparatively easy to the other works I did as I just studied the consumer protection act
in my first semester, I even got my articles published on legal service India website. I made a
few PPTs on Consumer Councils and on offences and penalties for my boss for her
presentation during her talks in all kinds of conferences as she is even a public speaker. I also
worked on editing the PPTs made by my boss. On my fourth day I was made to write 10 short
articles on the Consumer related issues as my colleges were working on distributing
pamphlets to the public about consumer amendments brought in during November and
December of 2022 along with the shorts articles I even made 10 Canva posters for the NGOs
Instagram page on consumer awareness. On the fifth day I worked on a junction redesign
program in Selam as that particular junction was very prone to road accidents and heavy
traffic. I had to study on how junction redesigns are done by studying the redesigning projects
done in junctions of Bengaluru and Jodhpur.
In week two I wrote a few writings on consumer issues in digital financial services like
online transactions mismanagement or online banking frauds etc. A very concerning statistic
was that around 31% of Indians have lost money through scams. I wrote an article on product
liability as I had studied it in my first semester and was a part of my semester project too. I
breaifly explained what product liability means and have cited 2 cases as well. The second
article I had written was on “who can file a complaint” to help to consumer figure out how do
they file a complaint, as many consumer who face problems are not sure of how to appproach
the authorities. Both my articles were published on legal services india website and can be
read there. After which I worked on RBI regulations that directly deal with consumers. I did
this because my boss to address a conference with reference to RBI regulations. She said I
had done a good job at the RBI regulations project as it needed a lot to research. I went
through all the regulations the RBI had brought in since 2015. Comparatively my second
week had more research than my first week which was interesting I got to read a lot of new
things.
In my third week at my internship three days were holiday due to Pongal in chennai in the
rest two days I made a list of consumer complaints relating to the Food Safety and Standards
Authority of India. I dived the complaints under a few head such as 1) foul smell and taste
2) expired food 3) food with worms 4) adulterated food. Etc. I was surprised to see over 230
complaints as it seemed to be a really high number (the complaints were from Northern
India), many complainants also found hazardous substances in their packaged food items like
plastic or shards of metal . Etc. It was really concerning seeing how badly the FSSAI is
working to protect the public in matters of food safety. As a government organisation we
hope they help up by providing us safe food items. Next project I worked on was
hypertension, it was a topic I had very little prior knowledge about. On the first project under
hypertension was the write about the hypertension protocols that are followed in Tamil Nadu,
Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telengana. I had to research through government portals as
the required information could only be found there. Next I researched on the drug and
medicine requirement on every level of hypertension. Each state had a different amount of
drug that has to be used and in few of the southern states different medicines are also used to
treat hypertension. The hypertension project even spilled over to my fourth week.
In the fourth week of my job I continued working on hypertension. I made a list of
hypertension and blood pressure specialists in Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. I did it so
that people who suffer from the disease get a ready made list of doctors with their contact
details in the above mentioned cities. People so suffer from HTN can contact the doctors
easily. Next I worked on the treatment of hypertension which included every aspect of
hypertension treatment be it the drug requirements, eating habits, health check ups.etc next I
wrote a literature review on HTN after some research by reading a new government reports
and reports of the WHO. I had written statistics about how many Indians suffer from HTN,
how many are aware of it and how many go through the required treatment. After the HTN
project I reviewed the IT revised rules,2021. I found out the points I thought that could’ve
been improved and gave the required ideas of improvement. Next I attended a Conference for
Environrnt Compnservation and pollution. It was attended by many dignitaries and civil
servants and a member of the State Comission for dispute resolution. It was a great
experience, as preaching about environmental conversation is a noble cause and the little
effect it creates is always welcomed. We had around 4 sessions from the morning 9 to
evening 5 o’clock it was tiring but yet it was a great feeling being there. The last project I
worked on was the problems that consumers face in insurance claims. The delay in claims,
false claims, no proper documents.etc were a few of the topic I wrote about. A few laws also
were mentioned by me with reference to insurance under deficiency of service.
I learned as an intern that it's important to be enthusiastic and willing to learn new skills, to
ask for more work, and to be curious about learning and asking questions. This attitude will
demonstrate that you are eager to assist and that you enjoy being a part of the team. If you are
curious and enthusiastic, you will also get a lot out of your internship, which opens up a lot of
opportunities. L In a professional setting, effective communication is essential. I learned that
if I have questions or don't know how to do something, I should talk to my manager by
phone, email, or text message. It's better to ask for help and clarification than to act as though
you know exactly what you need to do. However, I also discovered that you should Google
anything if you can. Being a good communicator includes not asking questions if you can
find answers elsewhere; remember that everyone's time is valuable. As an intern, effective
communication will contribute to growth, efficiency, engagement, and productivity.
