Unit I: Photonics (Interference & Diffraction)


Q1. Derive an equation for amplitude of diffracted light in Fraunhoffer
diffraction at a single slit. Obtain the condition of maxima.

Q2. In Newton’s rings experiment, show that diameter of dark rings is directly
proportional to square root of natural number.

Q3. Derive an equation for path difference in thin film of uniform thickness for
reflected light and obtain condition of minima.

Q4. In Newton ring experiment, the diameter of 5th ring was 0.30 cm and that of 12th
ring was 0.55 cm. if the radius of curvature of Plano-convex lens 200 cm. Calculate
wavelength of light.
Q5. Light of wavelength 5893 A0 is incident on a thin film of glass of µ=1.5 such
that the angle of refraction in the plate is 200. Calculate the smallest thickness of the
plate which will make it dark by reflection.

Unit II: Optics & Modern Physics.

Q1. Define Polarization of light. State and explain Law of Malus.

Q2. Explain construction and working of He-Ne Laser.

Q3. Explain Huygens theory of double refraction and distinguish between positive
and negative crystals.

Q4.Obtain an expression for numerical aperture and acceptance angle in optical


fiber.

maximum intensity of light. Calculate the angle that either of plates be turned if the
intensity of transmitted beam is 75% of the intensity of incident beam?

Q9.Explain the four important properties of laser.

Q10. Define optical fiber. Explain the basic structure of optical fiber, State two

Unit III: Statistical Physics
Q1. Derive an expression for the probability of drunkard for simple
random walk problem in 1 dimension.

Q.2 If p=q=1/2, and total possibilities, N= 200,


Calculate i) Mean value of n1 ii) Mean value of n2
iii) Mean square deviation iv) Root mean square deviation

Q.3. In a simple random walk problem, when particle undergoes total steps, N=3
and if p=q=1/2, calculate the probability when n1=0, 1, 2, 3.

Q.4 Define the following terms

Q.5 If there are five distinguishable particles a,b,c,d and e. Calculate the number
of microstates for macro-state (0,5), (1,4), (2,3), (3,2), (4,1).

Q.7 Bag contains 7 blue and 6 pink balls. Two balls are drawn at random one
after another, calculate the probability that both balls are blue.

Q.9 If three particles are tobe distributed in four energy levels, calculate all
possible ways of distributions when particles are,

microstates and energy for each microstates.
