Raja Ram Mohan Roy
Indian reformer who was one of the founders of the Brahmo Sabhain 1828,
the precursor of the Brahmo Samaj, a social-religious reform movement in the
Indian subcontinent. He was given the title of Raja by Akbar II, the Mughal
emperor. His influence was apparent in the fields of politics, public
administration, education and religion. Roy is considered to be the "Father of
Indian Renaissance" by many historians.
Press freedom: he spoke against the unjust policies of the British government especially the
restrictions on press freedom. Through his writings and activities, he supported the movement for
a free press in India.
He was a religious and social reformer and is known as the ‘Father of Modern India’ or ‘Father of
the Bengal Renaissance’.He campaigned for rights for women, including the right for widows to
remarry, and the right for women to hold property.
He was known for his efforts to abolish the practices of sati and child
]
marriage.
Raja Ram Mohan Roy campaigned against the caste system, untouchability, superstitions and
use of intoxicants.
