Worksheet 5 : Total Internal Reflection

Name : ............................ Date : ...........................

Investigating total internal reflection

Method

1. Place your Perspex block in the middle of a piece of A4 paper and draw round it.
2. Draw the normal line at right angles to the bottom of the block
3. Shine the light from a ray box onto the block so that the angle of incidence is 10o
4. Draw the emerging ray
5. Measure the angle of refraction and record it in the table
6. Repeat this for 15o, 20o,25o, 30o, 35o, 40o and 45o

When the light enters the block at an angle and is reflected back out it is calle TOTAL
INTERNAL REFLECTION. The angle this occurs at is called the CRITICAL ANGLE.
Questions :

1. Name the angles X, Y and Z

2. Write down all the relationships you know, or can derive, between X, Y and Z.

4. Fig. 6.1 shows a ray of light OPQ passing through a semi-circular glass block.
(a) Explain why there is no change in the
direction of the ray at P.

(b) State the changes, if any, that occur to the speed, wavelength and frequency of the light as it enters
the glass block.

(c) At Q some of the light in ray OPQ is reflected and some is refracted. On Fig. 6.1, draw in the
approximate positions of the reflected ray and the refracted ray. Label these rays. [2]
(d) The refractive index for light passing from glass to air is 0.67. Calculate the angle of refraction
of the ray that is refracted at Q into air.

angle = ………………. [2]
