Healthy Lives
Client Profiles

Juanita Christiana
Juanita is 71 years old.
She has been a resident at Healthy Lives for several months now. Her decision to move into residential
care came after having a stroke. She has weakness on her left side and sometimes has balance
issues, which can leave her at risk of falls. Her short-term memory is not always good and she has had
a few situations where forgetting to do something (or forgetting that she has done something) has put
her at risk of harm.
Juanita found she was lacking confidence and was not always able to do the things she wanted to do
(she had to give up driving). Living alone became too much for her and she struggled to get to her
rehab appointments.
Juanita worked as a nurse in a small country hospital for many years, and then continued the rest of her
working years as a nurse in a mental health care facility. Juanita was an active volunteer in her local
community for over 20 years, assisting with many community-based projects. Mental health was her
main cause.
She has two children. Her son, Julian, lives in another state and is estranged from the family. Her
daughter, Johanna, visits Juanita three times a week. Johanna has a seven-year-old son who visits with
Juanita weekly. Johanna is a single mother.
Julian is aware that his mother is at Healthy Lives, but Juanita’s file states that no information is to be
disclosed to him. Juanita will determine whether she wishes to communicate with her son. Should she
become incapable of making such decisions in the future, Johanna will do so as the ‘person
responsible’.
Juanita’s husband died 17 years ago from ALS. Juanita cared for him as much as she could until his
condition required that he be admitted into care.
Juanita is sociable and very friendly. She loves a chat and the staff always find her easy going and a
joy to care for. The only time that they have issues with Juanita is when she is tired and doesn’t feel like
getting up and about and exercising. She often tries to dress herself and do personal support tasks
alone, but generally a staff member needs to come in and assist her. She has a number of activities
she has to do to help strengthen her left side so that she can be more independent in future.
Juanita is Catholic and likes to attend church every week with Johanna and her grandson. Juanita has
many friends from church. Johanna has expressed concern that she may not be able to keep taking
Juanita to church as her son is starting to participate in sporting activities on the weekends. She
understands that her mother will be very upset if she cannot go to church, but she must also look after
her son’s interests as well.
Johanna has mentioned that before her stroke, Juanita enjoyed puzzles such as jigsaws and
crosswords. She was always doing the crossword puzzles and the nine-letter-word/target puzzles in the

newspapers. She has noticed that her mother has not mentioned these puzzles since the stroke and
staff has not seen her take any interest in puzzles either, especially as the recreation room in the facility
has many puzzle books and jigsaws readily accessible to clients.

Garth Adja
Garth is a new client of Healthy Lives and receives in-home care. Garth is 68 and lives with his wife
Maggie, who is almost 70. Maggie cares for Garth as much as she can, however she has found her role
as his carer to be quite difficult and it has put stress on their relationship and her mental health.
Garth has mobility issues and most days uses a walker to get around the home. When he feels
stronger, he will attempt to use his cane, but it does exhaust him somewhat. His mobility issues mean
that he can no longer safely drive a car. Maggie has her licence but is not a confident driver anymore,
especially during poor weather and at night.
Garth and Maggie live out of town on a homestead on 4 acres. They have no children and no other
relatives close by. They were socially active for many years in their local community and were well liked
and respected. However, over the years, they have seen a number of their friends either pass away or
move away from the area to live in care or to live with their own families. Their community interaction
has thus dwindled over time.
Garth and Maggie are not religious. They were both keen gardeners and their property had beautiful
gardens. However, due to their age and various ailments, they have not spent as much time in the
garden as they would like to and it has become somewhat overgrown.
Due to his lack of mobility, Garth’s physical fitness is poor and he is putting on weight. His weight gain
and poor physical fitness have led him to catch some illnesses at times that have left him exhausted
and unable to get out of bed. They both used to enjoy cooking, using the produce grown from their
large veggie garden to make nutritious meals, but now tend to eat convenience meals.

Fabian Torres
Fabian is a residential client at Healthy Lives. He is 76. Almost 10 years ago, he was diagnosed with
prostate cancer. He is now free of cancer; however, due to the treatment and other ongoing health
issues, he has been unable to care for himself and decided that it was time to move into a residential
facility.
Fabian’s partner, Neal, was his main support throughout his cancer diagnosis. Neal resides at another
aged care facility (close to his own relatives but also not too far from Fabian) as he was diagnosed with
dementia several years ago. The reason Fabian and Neal are not in the same facility is due to finances
– Neal’s brothers contributed towards the cost of care and Neal’s daughter (from his marriage in his
early 20s) has also contributed. Fabian does not have the finances to afford the same facility and while
he is close to Neal’s family, they are already stretched thin supporting their father and brother.
Fabian has no family in Australia other than Neal and his own family. Neal’s brothers and daughter (and
her family) visit him regularly.
Fabian was an incredibly fit man prior to his cancer diagnosis. He had a home gym and enjoyed cycling
and jogging. Since recovering from cancer, he has become a vegan and is also very interested in
animal rights.
Fabian misses Neal terribly and struggles with the fact that Neal does not remember him anymore,
especially as his dementia continues to worsen and moments of clarity are few and far between. Neal’s
daughter has encouraged Fabian to consider that it might be time for look for a new partner or
companion, saying that Neal would have wanted Fabian to move on and be happy. Fabian has been
upset about this but deep down he understands that she is right. He does not want to live the rest of his
life alone but can’t help but feel he would be disrespecting Neal.
