Mandatory Volunteering

G1: Meina Takahashi

Have you ever forced to do any volunteer activities at school? How do you think about it? Is it good

or not? Mandatory volunteering is popular among high schools in the U.S., Canada, and any other

countries. Students are required to participate in volunteer work to fulfill their grade for graduation.

There are some arguments that mandatory volunteering is oxymoron. People who oppose to

mandatory volunteering think that students are too busy to do other work. If they volunteered at

school, they would have to submit a report about their experiences. If it is mandatory, it would be not

volunteer spirit. Despite that there are those arguments, I’m sure that there are a lot of advantages for

students.

Volunteering would be precious experiences. Most students would not do any volunteering even

if they have the opportunity to do that at school. Mandatory volunteering is a great chance to do new

activities for students. Though volunteering would be a bad experience for some students, those

experiences would be beneficial for them. Students cannot realize what kind of job they want to do

in the future before they do a lot of activities. Why don’t schools give them opportunities to face

themselves and think about their careers? They can do whatever they want to do in everyday life. If

they do not have any chances at school, they would not do anything except what they are interested

in. Volunteer work would be one of the triggers to decide the necessary determinants such as their

careers and their habits. Students can learn the value of giving to others. They might become loving

it and continue after school requirements were fulfilled. In spite of the fact that students are already

busy because of schoolwork and do not want to volunteer, they can find their new abilities once they

volunteer.
It is the most easiest way to join volunteer activities through school. Despite the fact that there

must be a lot of students who want to do something for people by volunteering, it is difficult to find

volunteer work. For those students, mandatory volunteering is helpful. Schools introduce or propose

many kinds of activities so that students can choose from them. In Japan, looking for organizations

that recruit volunteers is not an easy task. Most organizations set age discrimination and high school

students are not accepted. However, almost every school has connections to those organizations

which accept applications. They trust us because last year students also participated. Volunteer work

is based on reliance. There are no supplies and volunteers can betray the volunteer staff. This is

because most organizations are not open to students. In my case, it was too difficult to find volunteer

work myself. I looked for organizations that apply to university students, but there are no institutions

that invite students. Though I know some schools want some students to help with teachers’ tasks,

most schools have already full of people. The volunteers are the same members as last year, so there

are no vacancies for new students. However, I can participate in the Kawasaki city volunteer center

after I contacted my teacher. To find out volunteer activities is too hard for individuals. On the other

hand, it is easy when students take advantage of their school.

Furthermore, we can expand our community by volunteering. At school, we are in small world and

can not know what the society is. We can not get only experiences but also connections with

different kinds of people. Most students might think that volunteer work is only for graduating high

school or passing exams for entering university. It is not correct. We can learn how to behave and

how to contribute to our society through volunteering. Although students are busy to do school

work, volunteering give students completely different things from studying at school. Students can

also learn how to manage their tasks. This skill would be useful for their future.
For those reasons, I agree with mandatory volunteering even though it is oxymoron. I think that

Japanese schools should also develop this system. It might be challenging for some students to do

such activities. However, It must be beneficial for their future. When students become an adult and

start their career, they would be proud of them. Volunteering experiences are beneficial to enter the

world of work.Students can get such a experience by only volunteering. It must be the easiest way to

find volunteer work rather than looking for such work by their selves. They also expand their

community by volunteering. There are a lot of people who have the same characteristics as you.

Mandatory volunteering allow students to do volunteering easier and give them useful experiences. I

recommend high schools and junior high schools to introduce mandatory volunteering. Why don’t

you accept that kind of volunteering?
