Neil Armstrong
1
In 1969 U.S. astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first person to walk on the moon. Millions of
2
people watched on television as Armstrong stepped out of his spacecraft and said, “That’s one
3
small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
4
Neil Alden Armstrong was born on August 5, 1930, in Wapakoneta, Ohio. Growing up in rural
5
America he loved to learn about aeroplanes and space. He got his student pilots’s licence when
6
he was 16 – even before he learned to drive a car. After high school Armstrong became an air
7
cadet, or trainee, in the U.S. Navy. When Neil was 17, he went to university to
8
study aeronautical engineering — the science used in the designing, building and testing of
9
aircrafts. Clever! In the early 1950s Armstrong was a pilot in the Korean War.
10
On July 16, 1969, Armstrong, Edwin E. (Buzz) Aldrin, Jr., and Michael Collins left for the moon
11
in the Apollo 11 spacecraft. Four days later, Armstrong became the first person to step out
12
onto the moon’s surface. The rocket that launched Neil and his crew into space – the Saturn V
13
rocket – was as tall as a 36-storey building! The Launch Control Center – which housed the
14
team of people responsible for overseeing the launch from the ground – was situated 3.5 miles
15
from the launch pad itself. Neil walked a distance of about 60 metres on the surface of the
16
moon —that’s roughly the length of 11 Asian elephants!
17
For more than two hours Armstrong and Aldrin collected samples of moon soil, made
18
measurements, and took photographs before they began their return trip to Earth.
19
Armstrong retired from NASA in 1971. He continued to teach and to work on committees about
20
the space program. He died on August 25, 2012, in Cincinnati, Ohio.
