No of Experiment : 05
Name of Experiment : Study on Determination of Yarn count by Wrap
Reel and Weight Balance.

Introduction : Yarn is a continuous strand composed of fibers, filaments, or other

materials that are twisted or laid together to form a long, flexible strand. Yarns are
fundamental components in the production of textiles, as they are used in processes
such as weaving, knitting, and sewing to create fabrics. Count is the numerical
expression which expresses coarseness or fineness of yarn.It means that, ”Count, a
number indicating the mass per unit length or length per unit mass of a yarn”.Count
mainly two types; Direct count & Indirect count. Direct count is commonly used in
systems like the English Cotton Count (Ne), Metric Count (Nm) and Worsted. Indirect
count is commonly used in systems like Tex, Denier and lb/spindle. The count of cotton
yarn is determined by the length of the hanks of 840 yards divided by the weight in 1
pound. A wrap reel or skein winder is a device for measuring yarn and making it into
hanks of a standard size. The reel is of a standard size and its revolutions are counted
as the yarn is wrapped around it. Typically, a set number of revolutions will be used
so that the hank is of a standard size — a skein or lea. For example, a skein of cotton
would be 80 turns on a reel of 54 inches circumference, making 120 yards, while the
standard length for wool worsted would be 80 yards.

Objectives : 1. To know about yarn count.

2. To know about the classification of count.
3. To know about Wrap Reel.
4. To know about Lea.
5. To determine yarn count by using Wrap Reel and weight balance.

Atmosphere : Room temperature 24°C,

Relative Humidity(RH%) 57%.

Materials and Equipment :

• Yarn • Wrap reel
• Weight balance • Calculator
• Scissors
Wrap reel Weight Balance

Sample Size: 1 Lea = 120 yards

Working Procedure :
i. At first, note the room temperature and relative humidity with the help of
a hygrometer.
ii. Select a suitable package (cheese or cone) of yarn for warping to the reel.
iii. Fix the yarn in the screw of the reel, passing it through the yarn guide.
iv. The reel has a diameter of 54 inches.
v. To take 120 yards of yarn, rotate the reel 80 times.
vi. The gauge and warning bell indicate the start and finish points.
vii. Remove the yarn from the reel, tying a knot to prevent unraveling.
Weigh the cotton yarn using a Knowles balance.
viii. Adjust the rider’s position until the balance beam is level.
ix. Read the count directly from the scale, opposite a line in the middle of the
rider.
x. Repeat this procedure five times.
xi. Record the values and calculate the average count.
We will prepare 3 leas in the same way to calculate avg count.
The rest lea will be tested in the same way mentioned above procedure. Then will
calculate the average count.
Data :

Sl Yarn length Yarn weight Yarn Count AVG

No. Count (X) Count

1 120 yd 3.34 gm 19.40 20

2 120 yd 3.45 gm 18.78 19 20

3 120 yd 3.25 gm 19.93 20

Result : The Avg count is 20 Ne.

Remarks :
1. Try to maintain a stable environment during the measurement period.
2. To maintain proper tension of yarn when the yarn is wind on wrap reel.
3. Weight is taken very carefully.
Conclusion : By this experiment I have learnt from this experiment we learned about
count,Lea and Wrap Reel. I have also learnt about how to making lea and how to
calculation of yarn count by Wrap Reel. I hope this experiment will help in my future
work place.
