English in The World

Though English is an international language, it has many varieties around the world. In our show today,
we have three students talking about how English is used in their countries.

An: I come from Vietnam where English is a foreign language. We use Vietnamese in most social contexts
and only some of us use English at school and the workplace. Students learn English at school from
Grade 1. It’s believed that a student stands a higher chance of getting a well-paid job if he or she is fluent
in both written and spoken English. So, I’m trying my best to be good at it. I often learn this language by
going over textbooks, watching English television programs with subtitles and looking for information
online.

Kerubo: Kenya’s official languages are English and Swahili. English is the official language used by the
government in laws, higher education, and other aspects. We started to use English when English-
speaking people first came to our country in the 19th century. My plan is to find a job in urban areas, so I
am learning to communicate fluently in English.

David: As a Canadian citizen, English is my first language, also known as my mother tongue. It is one of
the two official languages in Canada. The country emphasizes bilingualism, which means we are
proficient in both French and English. But, we have more than one variety of English. English can vary in
grammar structures, vocabulary, and accents between regions.
