Table 1: Aim, purpose and objectives of the project

RESEARCH METHOLOGY
In this project, both secondary and primary research were used as research methods to support the decisions. Thus,
an observation was conducted at the Bottega Veneta store in Paris, and a survey of seventy-eight people was
conducted as part of the business planning project to determine customer needs and adapt the project accordingly.
These research methods have helped to enable informed decision-making and to design a collection that meets
customers' preferences and requirements.

2.5 TECHNICAL SHEETS

Bottega Veneta's sustainable capsule collection is a special selection

of garments that are not only stylish, but also eco-friendly. Each of the
three main pieces has been designed with 3D-printed elements that
offer a unique aesthetic while helping to reduce the environmental
footprint. A unique feature of the collection is the ability to wear the
garments with or without the 3D-printed embellishments, creating
different looks and styles. Thus, the products can be minimalistic on
the one hand but eye-catching on the other. In addition, customers
have the option to purchase the product with only the 3D-printed
embellishments which are included in the price. However, consumers
can also purchase just the 3D-printed embellishments in multiple
colour options for the suit pants and corset top to customize. This
customization option gives consumers the opportunity to create an
exclusive look that reflects Bottega Veneta's identity.

CAPSULE COLLECTION A/W 2024

3.1 SOURCING (FABRICS & MATERIALS)

Organic cotton

The use of organic cotton in Bottega veneta's sustainable

capsule collection offers several advantages, which are
explained below. Organic cotton offers a lightweight and
breathable option for the blazer, a comfortable and durable
option for the suit pants, and a flowing and comfortable option
for the maxi skirt that feels soft against the skin. In addition,
organic cotton is a sustainable option because it is grown
without harmful pesticides and fertilizers, which is not only
better for the environment, but also for the health and safety of
farmers and workers (Sustainable Jungle, 2022:online).
Furthermore, organic cotton is grown using more sustainable
methods, which helps to preserve soil quality and reduce water
consumption. Organic cotton uses less water, is safer for
farmers and workers, promotes biodiversity, and is softer and
hypoallergenic (The Level Collective, n.d.:online). Certifications
for organic cotton such as GOTS, OCS and BCI ensure that
sustainable practices are used in cultivation and processing
(Textile Exchange, n.d.:online).

Figure 64: Organic cotton (Source: Project Cece, 2021:online)

21
CAPSULE COLLECTION A/W 2024

3.1 SOURCING (FABRICS & MATERIALS)

Orange Fiber

Orange Fiber is a sustainable fabric made from

by-products of the citrus industry, eliminating
waste and promoting a circular economy (Cikis
Studio, 2022:online). It also offers functional
benefits such as a soft and silky texture,
breathability and versatility in terms of dyeing
and printing. These properties make Orange
Fiber a suitable alternative to silk for making
garments such as corset tops that require a
luxurious and delicate look. Orange Fiber works
perfectly for Bottega Veneta's Capsule
collection and still offers quality and style due
to its many sustainable and functional benefits.

Figure 65: Orange Fiber (Source: Orange Fiber, n.d.:online)

22
CAPSULE COLLECTION A/W 2024

3.1 SOURCING (FABRICS & MATERIALS)

Piñatex

Piñatex is a sustainable fabric made from pineapple leaves,

which offers several advantages for its use in the collection.
Using pineapple leaves as a raw material reduces the need for
additional resources and supports waste reduction. Piñatex is
eco-friendly, vegan, animal cruelty free, biodegradable,
durable, versatile and supports local communities (Your
Sustainable Guide, n.d.:online). The inclusion of Piñatex in the
collection offers many benefits, especially in terms of
sustainability and ethics. By choosing Piñatex, Bottega Veneta
can demonstrate its commitment to sustainability and
environmental protection. The PETA-Approved Vegan
certification offers Bottega Veneta the opportunity to show its
customers that its leather-like garments are made from
sustainable materials. In addition, the fabric blend of piñatex
with polylactic acid used in the collection makes the material
more resistant and increases durability.

Figure 66: Piñatex (Source: Haeckels, n.d.:online)

23
CAPSULE COLLECTION A/W 2024

3.1 SOURCING (FABRICS & MATERIALS)

Polylactic acid (PLA)

Polylactic acid (PLA) is produced from renewable resources

such as corn starch, sugar cane or tapioca roots and is a
biodegradable and compostable material (Bioplastic News,
n.d.:online). Due to this production from natural materials and
its lower environmental impact compared to conventional
synthetic materials, PLA is an environmentally friendly
alternative and therefore suitable for sustainable collection. In
addition, PLA offers a number of positive properties, such as
versatility and high comfort due to its excellent breathability
(Bioplastic News, 2020:online). When combined with piñatex,
PLA can provide durability and structure, making it suitable for
the production of leather-like garments.

24
CAPSULE COLLECTION A/W 2024

3.1 SOURCING (FABRICS & MATERIALS)

Lyocell

Lyocell is a versatile and sustainable fabric produced in a

closed-loop production process to minimize waste and harmful
chemicals (Trvst, 2021:online). A leading brand of Lyocell is
Tencel, which is made from eucalyptus trees from certified
forests without pesticides, fertilizers or irrigation. Compared
to other fabrics, the production process also uses less water
and energy, making it a more sustainable choice for fashion
brands (Munique, 2021:online). To confirm the sustainability
and safety of Lyocell fibers and fabrics, there are various
certifications such as FSC, GOTS, EU Ecolabel and Oeko-Tex.
These certifications guarantee that the fibers and fabrics have
been produced under strict social and environmental criteria.
Lyocell is not only sustainable, but also soft, comfortable,
breathable and moisture-wicking, which makes it a good
choice for the tight-fitting pieces in the collection. Due to its
good elasticity, the garment made of Lyocell adapts to the
shape of the body and is therefore very comfortable to wear.

25
CAPSULE COLLECTION A/W 2024

3.1 SOURCING (FABRICS & MATERIALS)

Recycled polyester

Recycled polyester is a sustainable option made from used

plastic waste and has similar properties to commercial
polyester. In the collection, it is a lightweight and durable
option for pleated pants and a soft and flowy option for dresses.
In addition, recycled polyester reduces waste, energy
consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, making it a more
sustainable option for the textile industry (Fashion United,
2018:online). So using recycled polyester can help create a
more sustainable collection, reduce waste and protect
resources.

Spandex

Spandex is a material that is often used for its functional

properties, particularly its elasticity and stretch. However, since
it is only used to a small percentage as an admixture to other
materials in Bottega Veneta's sustainable collection, it will not
be discussed in detail in this paper.

26
CAPSULE COLLECTION A/W 2024

3.1 SOURCING (FABRICS & MATERIALS)

Recycled plastic

Bottega Veneta's sustainable Capsule

Collection uses recycled plastic salvaged
from the sea in Italy in collaboration with
WWF. The recycled plastic is used as
material for the embellishments and pieces,
which are made with 3D-printing
technology. Using recycled plastic has many
benefits, including reducing pollution and
promoting a sustainable future. The 3D-
printing process allows the company to
specifically and precisely manufacture the
parts it needs, reducing the consumption of
materials and resources. In addition, the
recycled plastic from the ocean reflects the
theme of the collection, thus drawing Figure 67: Plastic bag (Source: Pinterest, n.d.:online)

attention to environmental pollution. The

use of recycled plastic and 3D-printing
technology offers an innovative and eco-
friendly alternative to traditional materials
and manufacturing processes,
demonstrating Bottega Veneta's spirit of
innovation.

27
CAPSULE COLLECTION A/W 2024

3.2 DISTRIBUTION

The capsule collection will be available in selected Bottega Veneta

stores in the fashion capitals of Europe. In addition, three pop-up stores
will open in Milan, London and Paris, built using 3D-printing technology.
This strategy builds on the success of Bottega Veneta's previous pop-
up stores, which have raised awareness of the brand. The stores will be
decorated with eye-catching 3D-printed elements inspired by the
collection's theme to attract attention and drive sales. In addition,
artificial intelligence mirrors will be installed to allow customers to
customize and virtually try on pieces in order to enhance the customer
experience. Moreover, the 3D-printed elements can be purchased as
individual pieces in various colours in the stores. The collection will be
strictly limited to achieve a level of exclusivity that is already part of
Bottega Veneta's sales strategy and helps the brand be perceived as a
high-end brand, increasing its value and appeal to customers.

28
CAPSULE COLLECTION A/W 2024

3.2 DISTRIBUTION

The use of high quality materials and craftsmanship in

the production of garments is a fundamental principle
of Bottega Veneta and is continued in the collection
and extended by the use of more sustainable materials.
Bottega Veneta uses sustainable packaging materials
and reduces the size of boxes to avoid waste. The
packaging of the capsule collection is also made from
recycled materials to reflect the essence of the
collection. In addition, transportation is made eco-
friendly to reduce the carbon footprint. By working
with eco-friendly suppliers and using materials from
sustainable sources, the ecological impact in the
supply chain is reduced. Bottega Veneta is currently
working to improve the traceability of raw materials
and products in the supply chain, which will allow
customers to have a transparent insight into the origin
of the products in the Capsule Collection. Presently,
Bottega Veneta is addressing two important aspects of
sustainability: the circular economy and the reduction
of plastic (Vogue Business, 2023:online). By
manufacturing the 3D-printed elements from
recycled plastic waste from the sea in Italy,
the use of conventional plastic is avoided
and an environmentally friendly alternative
is created.

5.1 PRODUCTION

I decided to produce the sustainable Capsule Collection in Bottega

Veneta's workshops in Italy to maintain control over product quality
and ensure it meets the brand's high standards. Production in Italy
offers shorter lead times and access to the expertise of local artisans,
which is in line with Bottega Veneta's values and the image associated
with "Made in Italy." This demonstrates the brand's commitment to
quality, sustainability and social responsibility, and appeals to
conscious consumers, who identify with the brand's values. The
collection features 3D-printed embellishments made from recycled
plastic, minimizing waste by using only the necessary amount of
material. The 3D-printing process was outsourced to Materialise, a
company with extensive experience and expertise in the field to ensure
high-quality products. After a final quality check, the items are shipped
directly to selected Bottega Veneta stores to reduce shipping
distances. The production process is filmed and integrated into the
marketing strategy to give consumers an exclusive insight into the
production of their purchased products and to educate them about the
new sustainable 3D-printing technology.

Figure 74: Production (Source: Pinterest, n.d.:online)

33
CAPSULE COLLECTION A/W 2024

5.2 MANUFACTURING & SOURCING

The materials for the sustainable collection are sourced from domestic
and European suppliers to ensure that the garments meet Bottega
Veneta's high standards. Sourcing locally reduces transportation and
therefore greenhouse gas emissions, supports local economies and
creates jobs. Sourcing within Europe allows for a greater variety of
materials and more sustainable practices through a wider selection of
forward-thinking suppliers. In addition, some fabrics in the collection
are new and innovative, so sourcing domestically is not possible.
Controlled and transparent sourcing enables compliance with
sustainable and ethical practices and ensures the high quality of the
fabrics. Fabrics to be processed are transported to Italy by rail to
reduce the environmental footprint and protect the oceans. This
responsible sourcing of materials and promotion of sustainable
practices throughout the supply chain allows Bottega Veneta to
demonstrate its forward-thinking approach as a luxury brand with this
collection. At the heart of the collection is the use of 3D-printing
technology to create embellishments made from recycled plastic
found in the ocean. Bottega Veneta will collaborate with the WWF
organization to recycle plastic waste from the sea in Italy to create
exclusive and unique works of art. These plastics must first be recycled
and transformed into granules before they can be processed with the
3D-printer, which requires more time for the production process.

6 CONCLUSION

35
CAPSULE COLLECTION A/W 2024

6 CONCLUSION
In summary, the survey and observation of the Bottega Veneta store in
Paris provided many valuable insights for the introduction of a
sustainable capsule collection for Bottega Veneta, leading to informed
decisions. By expanding its brand portfolio to include a sustainable
collection, Bottega Veneta has the opportunity to demonstrate its
ecological responsibility and innovation in the fashion industry. Through
the use of 3D-printing technology and eco-friendly materials, the
collection highlights the potential of sustainable production methods for
creating high-quality and stylish garments. The underwater inspiration
and collaboration with the WWF organization also raise awareness of the
environmental impact on oceans, prompting consumers to reflect on
their choices. Additionally, the customization of 3D-printed pieces offers
the possibility of creating exclusive looks and variations, enhancing the
customer experience. As the fashion industry continues to face pressure
to improve its ecological and social impact, Bottega Veneta's sustainable
capsule collection can serve as a model for other brands. The collection
demonstrates the potential of sustainable practices and technologies,
while also promoting consumer education and awareness. However,
Bottega Veneta should not rest on this capsule collection alone but
should continue to seek solutions for sustainable thinking. Looking to the
future, Bottega Veneta has the opportunity to push the boundaries of
sustainable production methods further and incorporate new
technologies and materials. Additionally, various environmental themes
can be incorporated as part of further collections, serving both as
inspiration and as a means of raising public awareness. By prioritizing
sustainability, Bottega Veneta can contribute to addressing the global
challenges of climate change and environmental destruction, while
creating beautiful and timeless fashion.
