Procedure
– Check all vacuum lines in the complete vacuum system for:
♦ Cracks
♦ Traces of animal bites
♦ Kinked or crushed lines
♦ Lines porous or leaking
– Check vacuum line to solenoid valve and from solenoid valve
to corresponding component.
– If a fault is stored in the fault memory, check the vacuum lines
leading to the corresponding component and also check the
remaining vacuum lines in the system.
– If it is not possible to build up pressure with the hand vacuum
pump -VAS 6213- or if the pressure drops again immediately,
check the hand vacuum pump and connecting hoses for leaks.

♦ Renew all cable ties which are released or cut open when re‐
moving the engine. Refit in the same position when installing
the engine.
♦ Collect drained coolant in a clean container for re-use or dis‐
posal.

Note
♦ To make sure you can still move the front wheels when the
battery has been disconnected, only disconnect the battery
with the ignition key inserted.
♦ On four-wheel drive vehicles, the electronic parking brake
must be released before disconnecting the battery, so that the
propshaft can be turned during removal.

– Place drip tray for workshop hoist -VAS 6208- under engine.
– Open drain plug -1- and let coolant drain.
– Then disconnect coolant hose -2- from radiator.

Note
Lay a cloth under the hydraulic lines to catch any escaping hy‐
draulic fluid.
– Clamp off hydraulic hose -1- for power steering pump using a
hose clamp -3094- .
– Disconnect hydraulic hose from power steering pump.
– Unbolt hydraulic pressure line -2- at power steering pump and
lay pressure line on top of longitudinal member.
– Seal off open pipes/lines and connections with clean plugs
from engine bung set -VAS 6122- .

– Pull off rubber seal -1- and remove plenum chamber cover
-2-.
– Use screwdriver to pry off caps on wiper arms and slacken off
nuts -arrows- several turns.

♦ Plate -VAS 6131/10-1- , support set for Audi -VAS 6131/11-
and -VAS 6131/12- .
Procedure
• Engine/gearbox assembly removed and secured to scissor-
type assembly platform -VAS 6131 A- .
– Screw down spindles of the support elements (left and right)
at subframe as far as possible.
– Remove locating lugs from spindles.
– Remove subframe to the side.
Note
– Unscrew the two base plates for support elements (for sub‐
frame) on scissor-type assembly platform -VAS 6131 A- .
Note
The mounting points for engine (front), gearbox (rear) and tunnel
cross members remain unchanged.

the hub splines. Remove corrosion and apply only a very thin

– Check that the clutch plate is properly centralised (only nec‐
essary if you have carried out other work on the clutch).
– Check clutch release bearing for wear and make sure that
plastic ring is securely seated ⇒ Rep. Gr. 30 .
– A needle bearing must be fitted in the crankshaft on vehicles
with manual gearbox; install needle bearing if not already fitted
⇒ page 115 .
– Check whether dowel sleeves -A- for centring engine and
gearbox are fitted in cylinder block; install missing dowel
sleeves.
– Press intermediate plate between engine and gearbox onto
dowel sleeves.
– Bolt gearbox to engine.

The mounting points for engine (front), gearbox (rear) and tunnel
cross members remain unchanged.

the extractor attachment.

The partial vacuum in the cooling system causes the coolant to
