THE UNITED KINGDOM


The United Kingdom => Great Britain + Northern Ireland
The British Isles => everything + 600 islands
Great Britain => England, Scotland, Wales
I would like to speak about Great Britain. At first I would like to tell you something about
geography and population. The second part will be about history, political system and Flag
and the third part about sport and interesting places in the UK.
Geography.
The United Kingdom is located in north-west Europe on the island of Great Britain and
Northern Ireland. The UK is separated from France by English Channel. It consists of 4
countries (ENGLAND - London, WALES - Cardiff, SCOTLAND - Edinburgh, and N. IRELAND -
Belfast). UK neighbors are Ireland to west and France to south-east. There are mountain and
lakes on the west part.
The largest lakes are Loch Ness and Lough Neagh. The landscape (very green) and rivers are
on the south part. The longest rivers are the Severn and the Thames which flows through
London. There is a mild climate. In UK are often rainfalls.
Population
Population is above 60 million inhabitants. About 7 million live in London. We can find there
the following ethnic groups: English, Scottish, Irish, and Welsh. The official language is
English. Many people speak still Welsh, Scottish or Irish Gaelic.
History.
In Britain were 2 invasions. The first invasion was, when Romans invaded to England. The
second invasion was in 1066 by William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy.
Queen Victoria : She was the first member of the Royal family to live at Buckingham Palace.
She became Queen when she was 18. She and her husband had nine children.

Political System
Great Britain is a constitutional monarchy and it has a parliamentary democracy with the
King as the head of state. The Parliament is consisted of elected (voleny) House of Commons
(Lower house) and unelected House of Lords (Upper house). The Prime Minister is David
Cameron. There are two main political parties: the Labour Party (left) and the Conservative
Party (right).
BREXIT:
this word is formed of two words - BRITAIN and EXIT, which means that the U.K. has left the
European Union on 1st January 2021. Flag is known as the Union Jack represents three
kingdoms of the UK: England and Wales (the red cross of St. George), Scotland (the diagonal
white cross St. Andrew) and Northern Ireland (the diagonal red cross of St. Patrick)
Sports in UK: The national sport in UK is Football. Football is the most common sport in the
UK. The second main sport is Rugby; it is a national sport in Wales. Other most common
sport in UK is Cricket, Golf, and Box...
Symbols :Double Deck Buses, Red Post Boxes, Telephone Kiosks, The Royal Family,
Buckingham Palace, Houses Of Parliament, St Paul's Cathedral, Policemen, The London Eye,
Pub Signs and Tea.
British celebrities: Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, William Shakespeare, Sherlock Holmes,
Harry Potter the famous boy wizard, James Bond and then.
Famous universities: Oxford is the oldest university town, which lies on the river Thames.
Cambridge is a famous and old university town as well and it is situated on both banks of the
river Cam.
Places:

Stonehenge is a stone circle made up of 38 stones. It was built 5000 years ago. Most of
these stones, made from different types of rock, and many people think that is comes from
Wales.

London Eye: fourth-largest wheel in the world, A ride on the London Eye takes 30 minutes

Facts about british people: 61% of Britons have brown hair, The word pub is short for ‘public

house. Some pubs will provide games and books for people to play and entertain themselves

as they would at home- british love pubs. The main food is dinner.

Food: Fish and Chips, Full English Breakfast

They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day
