7. The average weight of 16 items is found to be 120 pounds with standard deviation 4.
Based on this information an investigator wants to test the claim that the mean weight of
all items is 125 pounds at 5% level of significance. Answer the following questions:
i). The critical value (table value) is______________
ii). The calculated test statistic is____________
Part Two: Show necessary Steps for the Following Questions
8. A probability distribution of a discrete random variable X is given below:
X 0 1 2 3
P(X) 0.2 X 0.4 2X
Find:
A) Value of X
B) E(X)
C) Var(X)
9. An experiment consists drawing a ball without replacement from three different urns each
containing three balls (white, black and red). Let a random variable X be the number of
white balls drawn. Thus answer the following questions
A). Construct a probability distribution of X
B). Calculate the average number of white balls that can be drawn
C). Calculate the variance of X
10. Suppose it is known that 4 out of 40 washing machines are not in perfect working order.
Three washing machines are selected at random from the 24 machines. Find the
probability that among the 3 selected machines:
A). Two machines are in working condition
B). At least one are in working condition
C). At most two are in working condition

11. A retailer determined that the average number of orders per day for a certain product is 5.
What is the probability that on any given day:
A). No orders are received
B). At least two orders will be received
12. The Ethiopian Roads Authority report shows that a service life time of construction
materials manufactured in a certain company is normally distributed with mean 400 years
with standard deviation 10 years. Recently the bureau proposes to buy at least 95 % of
the construction items from this company. If we select an item at random in a collection
of such items bought from this company, what would be its service life time?
13. Past experience shows that the standard deviation of the monthly income of textile
workers is 2400 birr. How large of textile workers would one need to estimate the
population mean to within birr 3000 with a probability of a 0.95 of being correct?
14. The Internal Revenue Service wants to estimate the average federal income tax paid by
households of Ethiopia. For this purpose 40,000 households from all regional states are
selected at random and found that their average amount paid is $4,500 with variance
$10,000. Construct a 97% confidence interval for the average amount paid by all
households of the country.
15. From long experience it is known that the daily production of a certain textile company is
normally distributed with mean 500 units with standard deviation of 16. But recently a
modified machine is introduced and its mean production for the last 64 days is found to
be 503 units. At 5% level of significance test the hypothesis that the new machine has
changed the overall mean production
