ADJECTIVES
 An Adjective is a describing word. It is used to give extra information about a
noun or a pronoun. We use them to describe people, place or things.

 Adjectives usually come before the noun they describe, but sometimes they
can come after the noun in a sentence.
Example- This is a red rose. The word “red” tells the colour of the rose.
He is a clever boy. . The word “clever” describe the boy.
It can also be written as: The rose is red and the boy is clever. (In these
sentences, the adjective red and clever has come after the noun.

KINDS OF ADJECTIVES

answer the question- 'of what kind?'
Example: That is a broken table.
Harry is a handsome boy.

Paris is a beautiful city.
The words broken, handsome, kind and beautiful are adjectives of quality.
Each one of them tell us what kind of a person, place or a thing is.

question 'how much?' They refer to an uncountable noun.

The words four, three and second are adjectives of number. They tell us
the numerical strength of people or things. They also describe in what
order one of them stands.

THE ORDER OF ADJECTIVE

A noun can have several adjectives describing it. Example: "She bought a
new red Italian table. There are certain rules on the correct order of these
adjectives.
Determiners— opinion- size- age- shape- colour- origin- material- a
word describing purpose / function.
Examples- My huge new dining hall. (Determiner- size- age-
purpose/function word)
The oval, new, red clock (Determiner- shape, age- colour)

person. place animal or a thing, Proper adjectives come from proper
nouns and they always start with a capital letter. Most proper adjectives
describe something in terms of nationality, religion and culture.

Example – Kangaroos are Australian animals.

In some cases, we can convert proper nouns into proper adjectives simply
by adding suffixes —- ish, -ese, -ian or -an for proper Nouns.
-ish- British, English, Irish, Polish, Scottish, Spanish, Swedish.
-ese- Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Nepalese.
-ian- Indian, Australian, Canadian, Egyptian, Italian, Nigerian, Peruvian.
-an- American, German, Kenyan, Korean, Mexica.
Some proper adjectives do not follow a pattern. For example, French,

Making Nouns into adjectives

Many nouns can be changed into adjectives by adding these ending

suffixes: -y, -al, -ful, -less, -able, -ish and -ous.

Example: beauty- beautiful juice- juicy fear- fearful

fool- foolish nature-natural nation-nationality

Nouns acting as adjectives

Noun can sometimes act as adjectives in sentence.

Example: Granny made an apple pie.

In this sentence, granny is a noun, made is a verb. Now look at the last
two words. Although the word 'apple' is a noun too, here it is describing
what kind of pie it is, so it is doing the job of an adjective.

Hence 'apple' is an adjective and pie is a noun.

Examples of some more nouns that can act as adjectives are-

Vegetable curry vegetable – adjective curry- noun

tennis ball tennis- adjective ball- noun
jewellery box jewellery - adjective box - noun
