Built in the 9th century during the reign of the Sailendra Dynasty, Borobudur is an architectural marvel made entirely of volcanic stone. The temple is designed in the form of a massive mandala, symbolizing the universe. It consists of nine stacked platforms, six square and three circular, topped by a large central dome. Surrounding this central dome are 72 Buddha statues seated inside perforated stupas. The walls and balustrades are adorned with intricate reliefs depicting the life of the Buddha and various teachings of Buddhism. Borobudur Temple was abandoned in the 14th century, as the influence of Hinduism and Islam spread across Java. It was rediscovered in the 19th century by the British governor Thomas Stamford Raffles.
