1. Define the term moment about a point

 The moment of a force about a point is the product of the force and
the perpendicular distance of its line of action from the pivot.

2. State two conditions necessary for a system of coplanar forces to be in

equilibrium?

 The sum of the forces in any direction is equal to the sum of the forces
in the opposite direction (translational equilibrium).

 The sum of the clockwise moments about any point is equal to the sum
of the anti-clockwise moments about that same point (rotational
equilibrium). This is the principle of moments.

3. Which of the two conditions is known as the principle of moments?

 The Principle of Moments states that when a body is balanced, the

total clockwise moment about a point equals the total anticlockwise
moment about the same point.

4. What is meant by each of the following:

 Center of gravity of a body: The center of gravity of a body is the

point through which the resultant gravitational force on the body acts.

 Stable equilibrium: A body is in stable equilibrium if, when slightly

displaced, its center of gravity rises and a restoring moment is
created that returns the body to its base.

 Unstable Equilibrium: A body is in unstable equilibrium if, when

slightly displaced, its center of gravity falls and a toppling moment is
created which removes the body from its base.

5. Describe with the aid of a diagram how you can determine the
position of the center of gravity of an irregular shaped lamina

You can find the center of gravity in an object experimentally

by hanging it from several points and using a plumb line to mark the
vertical line.
6. State three factors which affect the stability of an object

 Height of its center of gravity.

 Width of its base.

 Its weight. A larger weight increases the restoring moment of a stable

body thereby increasing its stability. It also increases the toppling
moment of an unstable body, thereby decreasing its stability.

7. Calculate the weight of the rod and the reaction from its support

60 x 3.0 = 180N – weight of rod

60 x 0.2 = 12Nm – reaction of the support
