An analogy presents a relationship between words or ideas. It may be a
comparison that shows how two or more objects are similar based on some of
their features. The relationship may be shown in various ways:
1. Similarity in meaning
2. Cause-and-effect relationship
3. Whole-Part relationship
4. From particular to general or from general to particular
5. Degree of intensity
6. Contrast or being opposite in meaning
7. Object-and-Action relationship
8. Classification
9. Characteristics, occupations and place of work

Word analogies are used often to check how students are able to
relate different ideas. To use an analogy or to complete an analogy, we
must know not only what the words mean but we must also know how the
ideas are related to each other.

Example: Doctor is to hospital as teacher is to __________.

Answer: School (Hint: professionals and the places where they work)

Exercises: Complete the analogy using the given hint.

Example: juice : liquid : : stone : __________.
Hint: classification of material into a state of matter

Example: hot : cold : : industrious : __________.

Hint: opposites
