    Interest Groups In-Class Mini-Project

    1) Begin by reading “Interest Groups” on the classpage.


    As you read, answer these questions for your notes
    a. What is an interest group?
    b. What are the methods used by interest groups to
    accomplish their goals?
    c. What are some ways that interest groups might
    have a negative impact on our political process?
    d. What are four broad ways that the effect of
    interest groups on our political system is
    positive?
    e. How are lobbyists and interest groups connected?

    2) Please choose one of the following interest groups.

    US Chamber of Commerce
    National Resources Defense Council
    National Rifle Association- Institute for Legislative Affairs
    National Association of Realtors
    PhRMA
    AFL-CIO

    Please visit your interest group’s website and see what


    issues they are advocating for. Write these down in your
    notes

    3) Then visit the website www.opensecrets.org. Search


    for the group you have chosen and see how much they
    have spent on lobbying / to which politicians they
    have been donating.
