FIRST READING
A reading from the prophet Jeremiah [Jer.1:4-9]

T
he word of the Lord was addressed to me, saying: Before I
formed you in the womb I knew you; before you came to birth
I consecrated you; I have appointed you as prophet to the
nations. I said, ‘Ah, Lord; look, I do not know how to speak: I
am a child!’ But the Lord replied, ‘Do not say “I am a child.” Go now to
those to whom I send you and say whatever command you. ‘Do not be
afraid of them, for I am with you to protect you, it is the Lord speaks!’
Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me:
‘There! I am putting my words into your mouth.’
The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Z40:2 and 4b, 7-8a, 8b-9,10,12

R/. See, I have come, Lord, to do your will.
1. I waited, I waited for the Lord,
And he stooped down to me;
he heard my cry.
He put a new song into my mouth,
praise of our God. R/.

2. You delight not in sacrifice and offerings,

But in an open ear.
You do not ask for holocaust and victim.
Then I said, "See. I have come. R/.

3. In the scroll of the book it stands written of me:

“I delight to do your will, O my God;
Your instruction lies deep within me.” R/.

4. Your justice I have proclaimed

In the great assembly.
My lips I have not sealed;
You know it, O Lord. R/.

5
5. O Lord, you will not withhold
Your compassion from me.
Your merciful love and your faithfulness
Will always guard me. R/.

SECOND READING
A reading from St. Paul's letter to the Philippians [Phil 2:1-4]

B
rethren: If there is any encouragement in Christ, any incentive
of love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and
sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having
the same love, being in full accord and of one others better
than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but
also to the interests of others.

The word of the Lord.

Alleluia Alleluia,

O hear the gospel of Jesus. Give ear to the teaching of Christ. Receive
the Word of truth and love, and let it fill your life. Alleluia

GOSPEL
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew.

T
[Matt.19:16-26]
here was a man who came to Jesus and asked,“ Master,
what good deed must I do to possess eternal life?” Jesus
said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There
is one alone who is good. But if you wish to enter into life,
keep the commandments.” He said, “Which?” “These:” Jesus replied.
“You must not kill. You must not commit adultery. You must not bring
false witness. Honour your father and mother, and: you must love your
neighbour as yourself.” The young man said to him, “I have kept all
these. What more do I need to do?” Jesus said, “If you wish to be
perfect, go and sell what you own and give the money to the poor, and
you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” But when the
young heard these words, he went away sad, for he was a man of great
wealth. Then Jesus said to his disciples, “I tell you solemnly, it will be

6
hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Yes, I tell you
again, it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than
for the rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.” When the disciples
heard this, they were astonished. “Who will be saved, then?” they said.
Jesus gazed at them. For men, he told them, “This is impossible, for
God everything is possible.”
The Gospel of the Lord.

HERE I AM, LORD

Chorus
Here I am, Lord, Is it I Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go, Lord, if you lead me,
I will hold your people in my heart.
1. I, the Lord of sea and sky
I have heard my people’s cry.
All who dwell in dark and sin,
my hand will save.
I who made the stars of night,
I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear my light to them?
Whom shall I send?

7
2. I, the Lord of snow and rain,
I have borne my people’s pain,
I have wept for love of them,
They turn away.
I will break their hearts of stone,
give them hearts for love alone,
I will speak my words to them,
whom shall I send?

3. I, the Lord of wind and flame,

I will tend the poor and lame,
I will set a feast for them,
my hand will save.
Finest wheat I will provide.
Till their hearts be satisfied.
I will give my life to them.
Whom shall I send?

SONG OF THE YOUNG PROPHET

Chorus
Oh, the word of my Lord,
deep within my being
Oh, the word of my Lord,
you have filled my mind

1. Before I formed you in the womb

I knew you through and through,
I chose you to be mine.
Before you left your mother’s side
I called to you, my child, to be my sign.

2. I know that you are very young,

But I will make you strong
I’ll fill you with my work:

8
And you will travel through the land
Fulfilling my command which you have heard.

3. And ev’rywhere you are to go,

my hand will follow you,
You will not be alone
In all the danger that you fear,
You’ll find me very near,
Your word my own.

4. With all my strength you will be filled;

You’ll destroy and you’ll build,
for that is my design.
You will create and overthrow,
Reap harvest I will sow, your word is mine.
