Today, I spent time studying the structure and goals of the Philippine education system,
particularly focusing on the K to 12 Basic Education Program. I found it quite interesting
to see how the system has evolved over time to make education more accessible and
relevant. The introduction of the K to 12 program added two more years to high school,
which I realized was designed to help students be better prepared for higher education
or employment. It emphasizes learning that is relevant to real life, which makes sense
since education should equip us with skills we can use after we leave school.
I also learned about how the curriculum is organized into different stages from
kindergarten through Grade 12, and how it gradually builds up students’ knowledge and
skills. I found it fascinating how each stage has its specific goals. For example, in early
grades, there’s a strong focus on fundamental literacy and numeracy, while in high school,
the curriculum starts to include more complex topics like critical thinking, problem solving,
and even career preparation.
Another key aspect that stood out to me was the use of the mother tongue in early
education, which I think is a good approach. It makes learning more accessible to young
students, especially those who might struggle with English at that stage. The spiral
progression in the curriculum also ensures that lessons are revisited and expanded as
we move up the grades, which seems like a great way to reinforce learning.
What also caught my attention was how much importance is placed on holistic
development. The system not only aims to make students knowledgeable but also skilled,
values-driven, and ready for the 21st-century workplace. Overall, I feel like the system
tries to address both academic knowledge and real-world readiness, which is a good
balance.
Reading through this, I began reflecting on my own education experience and how it
aligns with these goals. This learning log is a good way for me to keep track of what I’m
gaining from these readings and to think about how this knowledge connects to practical
outcomes in education.
