Construction of An Achievement Test

Definition: Achievement test is a systematic procedure for determining the amount a learner has learned through
instruction, as well as a measure of knowledge and skills in a content area.

Weight given to the objectives:

A test on English (language & literature) includes the knowledge of content as well as the knowledge of four skills, LSRW
and their sub-skills, grammar and vocabulary. Based on this essential knowledge which is vital to any language
competence, the following cognitive objectives (knowledge, understanding and application) and psychomotor objectives
are formulated.
Knowledge: The content involves the learner’s skill to recall and recognize sounds, words, information.
Understanding: It implies the abilities to understand the meaning of each word and structure and find contextual clue to
meaning, grasp central idea, interpret ideas, etc.
Application: It signifies the ability to use the learnt material in an unknown, challenging situation.
Psychomotor: It suggests the ability to do some physical activity by using the limbs body movement.
Teacher should allocate marks to these objectives keeping in view the age group and class. Understanding and application
are given a little more importance as they are significant than knowledge and psychomotor skill.
