*Batch Answer All Questions KL CO

An inlet stream consists of nitrogen, hydrogen and carbon-dioxide with flow

rates 100,300mand 1 lbmol/hr is supplied at 80F and 300psia is compressed to
4000psia by the use of an isentropic compressor. The stream from the
compressor is mixed with the recycle stream in a mixer block operated at
4000psia, before introducing in to the reactor the mixture effluent is heated to
900F at 4000psia. The reactor operates at a temperature of 900F and a
pressure of 3970psia. The reactor outlet is entered in a heater operated at 80F
1 and 3970psia. The outlet from the heater is send to flash drum(flash2) Ap CO3
produces vapor and liquid stream where the vapor is sent to a splitter in which
one stream is compressed in a isentropic compressor at 4000psia and the other
stream is used as purge where 0.01% is purged. • The discharged stream from
the compressor is recycled to the mixer block at 4000psia. Using NRTL
thermodynamic model and Newton’s iteration method to simulate the
ammonia production process and compute component-wise flow rate and
composition of all stream.
2 A hydrocarbon vapour enters absorption column at the bottom stage and the Ap CO3
absorbent enters above the top stage. A column operates at 75 psia with no
pressure drop and it has 4 equilibrium stages. Apply the PENG ROBINSON
equation of state in the simulation.
a) Simulate absorber model and compute the product composition.
b) Perform sensitivity analysis by examining the effect of absorbent flow rate
on the exiting C3 composition in the top product.
c) Compute the absorbent flow rate to keep 15mole% of C3 in the gas product
Assignment / Tutorial / Case Study Question Paper

A feed stream, consisting of 60 mole % ethane and 40 mole% ethylene, enters a

DSTWU column having a flow rate of 200 lbmol/hr at 75F and 15 psia. This feed
is required to fractionate in a distillation column capable of recovering at least
99.6% of the light key component in the distillate and 99.9% of the heavy key
component in the bottoms. The sample process operates at 300 psia with zero
tray-to-tray pressure drop. The pressure in the reboiler as well as condenser is
also 300 psia. In the simulation, use total 30 theoretical stages (including
condenser and reboiler) and a total condenser. Applying the RK-Soave property
3 method, simulate the column and calculate the minimum reflux ratio, actual Ap CO3
reflux ratio, minimum and actual no. of stages, and feed location.
Replace the DSTWU by RADFRAC model and simulate the column. The column
has 68 theoretical stages (including condenser and reboiler) and a total
condenser operates at 300 psia with zero pressure drop throughout. The
distillate rate, reflux ratio and feed tray location are given as 79.8 lbmol/hr,
8.75 (mole basis) and 41 (above-stage), respectively. Compute the composition
of top and bottom products. Tabulate and plot graph of temperature vs
number of stages.
A mixture containing 50 wt% acetone and 50 wt% water is to be separated into
two streams – one enriched in acetone and other in water. The separation
process consists of extraction of the acetone from the water into methyl
isobutyl ketone (MIBK), which dissolves acetone but is nearly immiscible with
water.
4 Ap CO4
The overall goal of this problem is to separate the feed streams which have
greater than 90 % purity of water and acetone respectively. Use SRK
thermodynamic method to simulate. The feed flow is 100 lbmol/hr,
temperature of 75 °F and pressure of 50 psi. MIBK enters column 1 & 2 with
Flowrate 20 lbmol/hr, 75 °F, and 50 psi
A certain heat exchanger has to be operated for a condensed steam at 120°C
flowing at a rate of 70 kg/min, pressure 1atm. Water at the rate of 100 kg/min,
5 Ap CO4
pressure 1atm, temperature 25°C, flows as cooling agent. Calculate the outlet
temperature of hot and cold fluid by detailed simulation.
Assignment / Tutorial / Case Study Question Paper

A 100 kmol/hr of feed consisting of 10, 20, 30 and 40 mole % of propane, n-

butane, n-pentane, and n-hexane respectively, enters a flash chamber at 15
6 psia and 50 °F. The flash drum (Flash2) operates at 120 psia and 200 °F. Apply Ap CO4
the SYSOPO property method, compute the composition of the streams.
