Shear Force and Bending Moment Diagram

“Shear Force
It is obtained as algebraic sum of all the forces acting normal to the axis of beam either to the left or
to the right of the section”.

“Bending Moment
It is obtained as algebraic sum of moment of all the forces about the section, acting either to the
left or to the right of the section”.

Shear Force Diagram (SFD).

The graphical representation of shear force in which vertical axis represents shear force and the
horizontal represents the position of the section is called Shear Force Diagram (SFD).

Bending Moment Diagram (BMD).

The diagram in which the vertical axis represent bending moment the horizontal axis represent the
position of the section is called Bending Moment Diagram (BMD).

Types of beam
The following are the important types of beams :

1. Cantilever beam
4. Fixed beams

2. Simply supported beam

5. Continuous beam.

3. Overhanging beam
6. Propped Cantilever
Types of load
Following are the important types of load acting on a beam :

1. Concentrated or point load,

2. Uniformly distributed load, and

3. Uniformly varying load.

3. The positive values of shear force and bending moments are plotted above the base line, and
negative values below the base line.

5. The bending moment at the two supports of a simply supported beam will be zero.
6. Bending moment will be maximum at the point, when shear force equal to zero and changing the
sign.
