ANSWER KEY

SECTION – B

ANSWER 1 – In polyembryony, an embryo that develops from the synergid is haploid, while the embryo
that develops from the nucellus is diploid.

ANSWER 2 – The ovary develops into fruits and ovules develop into seeds.

ANSWER 3 – Generative cell .

ANSWER 4 - The stigma, which is the terminal receptive part of the pistil, determines the compatibility of
pollen grains. The stigma acts as a landing platform for pollen grains

ANSWER 5 –

The egg apparatus is composed of one egg and two synergid cells. It is present at the micropylar end of
the embryo sac.

SECTION – C

ANSWER 1 – Pollination in water plants, also called hydrophily, can occur through water, wind, or
insects. In surface hydrophily, pollen floats on the water's surface until it contacts flowers. In
submerged freshwater plants, like Vallisneria, the pollen released is lighter than water and floats on
the water surface. The pollen flows along the water current and reaches the stigma of the female
flower.

ANSWER 2 – No, pollination and fertilization are not necessary in apomixis because it is a form of
asexual reproduction that doesn't involve male gametes. In apomixis, seeds or embryos develop
without fertilization, and the resulting seed germinates into a plant that develops as a maternal
clone. The embryos develop directly from the nucellus or synergids, and the seeds develop directly
from megaspore mother cells or the nucellar cells .

ANSWER 3 – The zygote begins to divide after the primary endosperm cell (PEC) divides because the
zygote needs food to create new cells. The PEC forms the endosperm, which stores food for the
developing embryo. Without food, the zygote can't get the raw materials it needs to make new cells.
ANSWER 4 – In a three-celled pollen, one of the cells is a vegetative cell which forms the tube cell,
present at the tip of the tube. The remaining two cells are the male gametes and they are the actual
participants in fertilization. Hence, inside the pollen tube, the generative cells divide rather than the
vegetative cell. In 60% of the cases, the generative cell divides inside the pollen tube. In remaining
case, the generative cell divides much before pollination and hence, no division takes place in the
pollen tube.

ANSWER 5 – Parts of embryo sac of an angiosperm

A typical mature embryo sac of an angiosperm is composed of seven cells and eight nuclei. They are as
follows:-
● Egg apparatus with one egg and two synergid cells
● Three antipodal cells
● Two central polar nuclei remain free until fertilization
by male gamete.

Egg apparatus
The egg apparatus is present at the micropylar end and is composed of an egg and two synergids.
Antipodal cell
Three antipodals are present at the chalaza end.
Central polar nuclei
Two polar nuclei are present in the center and form a diploid secondary nucleus.
Role of synergids
Synergids consist of a filiform apparatus ( thickening of the cell wall facing the micropylar tip) that
directs the movement of the pollen tube inside the embryo-sac.
