INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

This study aims to identify the impact of listening to music on the

student's academic performance. Other students prefer to listen to music

while studying or even reading a book; they use this as a study buddy for

more focused attention or a tool for relieving the stress from their academic

endeavors. So, if university life has got you feeling a bit down, dazed or

distracted then it might be a good idea to put some music on while you study.

Not only will it help you concentrate on your studies, it will also help keep

stress at bay and put you in the learning mood.

Music is an art that gives pleasure and entertainment, soothes anxiety

and gives calmness on the human brain through mediation but too loud or to

jarring music distracts and may compete with attention. (Sharma, 2019)

Opinions regarding the influence of music in classrooms vary among experts;

some say that it relaxes or motivates students whereas; others say that it is a

distractor.

Students listen to music for many reasons and to experience comfort.

Goodwin (2015) explained that it is common for students to listen to music for

relaxation to release stress or anxiety.

In the modern era of technology, many students listen to music while

studying. This trend raises a question on how music effects one’s

concentration and performance during the study. There is a popular term

coined ‘The Mozart effect’ which shows that listening to classical music such

as Mozart help increase intellectual quotient (IQ) in spatial reasoning. More

and more, students are bringing headphones with them to libraries and study

halls. But does it actually help to listen to music when studying? While the so-

called 'Mozart effect', a term coined from a study that suggested listening to

music could actually enhance intelligence, has been widely refuted, there are

still many benefits of listening to music while studying:

Music that is soothing and relaxing can help students to beat stress or anxiety

while studying.

Background music may improve focus on a task by providing motivation and

improving mood. During long study sessions, music can aid endurance.

In some cases, students have found that music helps them with

memorization, likely by creating a positive mood, which indirectly boosts

memory formation.

Music has the ability to put us in a positive mood and make a positive

effect on our performance. It can improve our sleep quality, and can even

help persons with dementia recall memories and emotions. These qualities

make it a perfect companion while studying.

Creating a personalized learning playlist can serve as a backdrop to

your study routine. Listening to your favorite tracks can inspire focus and

stimulate your eagerness to learn, thus making studying an enjoyable

endeavor rather than a dreaded task. music can play a vital role in helping

you remember what you’ve studied. The melody and rhythm of music can link

to specific information, making it easier to retrieve when needed.

1.2 Statement of the problem

The influence of music on study habits can be a problem for some

individuals because it may distract them from focusing on their tasks, listening to

music while studying might make it harder to think deeply or understand

complicated ideas. The sounds in the background could get in the way of

thinking carefully and figuring out complex stuff. So, it's possible that studying

challenging subjects might be tougher with music playing. While some people

find music helpful for concentration, others may struggle to concentrate with

background noise. It's a matter of personal preference and the type of task being

performed.

1.3 Research Objective

1.To determine how the presence of music, both with and without lyrics,

affects students' ability to concentrate on study tasks.

2. Describe the Impact of Listening to Music while studying.

3. To identify and understand any negative effects or challenges associated

with listening to music while studying.
