1. What can the Earth teach us?
Ans. Earth can teach a lesson to mankind on the preservation and
resurrection of life and how new life is believed to rise from the ashes of the
dead remains. The Earth never attains total inactivity. Nature remains at work
under apparent stillness and keeps the Earth alive.

3. In a world that is constantly running after 'more' chasing the next new thing,
would it be fair to think of Neruda's call as merely a fanciful idea? [CBSE QB,
2021]
Ans. Yes, the call of Neruda is good but more fanciful in nature. However, in case,
we are able to 'Keep Quiet, then it would affect life in and around the earth in
two ways. By keeping quiet, the fisherman will not kill whales for some time.
Also, salt gatherers will get some time to heal their wounded hands. In this
moment of silence, man will not harm nature, and both human beings and
nature will get some time to attend to and recover from their wounds. Thus, it
will give time to everyone for introspection.
4. The world has become a global village, and people across boundaries,
nationalities and communities are now connected to one another. With the
advancement of technology, and the advent of social media, do you think that
the task of keeping quiet, as envisaged by Neruda, has become easier or more
complicated? Justify your stance. [CBSE QB, 2021]
Ans. World has become a global village, the people all over the world are
interconnected with each other with the help of transport and communication
means. People use many transport means like buses, cars, and aeroplanes,
ships in order to travel from one place to another place for travelling purposes
or for the purpose of meeting their loved ones. In today's era, social media
including Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, Snapchat, etc. has become a huge
platform by which the people all over the world are interconnected with each
other, so the task of keeping quiet has become easier.
5. What does Neruda mean by 'an exotic moment without rush' in his poem,
Keeping Quiet?
Ans. According to the poet, Pablo Neruda the moment when everyone would be
quiet would be an exciting and thrilling moment. There will be no rushing of
everyday work, no sound of machines polluting the environment. It will be a
moment of introspection and universal brotherhood.
6. Life is what it is about... How is keeping quiet related to life?
Ans. 'Keeping Quiet' is related to life because in life, we need to pause for a moment
and introspect. It is only when we introspect that we realise the consequences
of our actions and are able to correct them. Introspection will help us all live in
peace and harmony. It will also help us to understand ourselves when we are
sad so that we don't threaten ourselves with death and destruction. Keeping
quiet will nurture good thoughts within us just like mother Earth.

7. “There can be life under apparent stillness.” Explain.
Ans. Neruda doesn't equate stillness with total inactivity. Under this apparent
stillness there is life. We can learn it from the earth. When everything seems
dead, the earth remains still alive. It is never dead. The life on the earth goes
on as usual under the apparent stillness.

to attaining a better, more peaceful world.

more peaceful world because it makes us introspect and reflect upon our
actions. It helps us better understand ourselves and what we want. It also
enables us to realise that many of our mindless actions are only harming us
and not giving us happiness.

3. Imagine you are Pablo Neruda , the poet of Keeping Quiet.
What advice might you offer to Robert Frost, the poet of A Roadside Stand, in
the context of his conflicted emotions, as displayed in the given lines-
The requisite lift of spirit has never been found,
Or so the voice of the country seems to complain,
I can’t help owning the great relief it would be
To put these people at one stroke out of their pain.
Pen down your advice , in a letter to Frost.
Ans. You may begin this way:
Dear Robert
I recently read your poem, "A Roadside Stand," and was struck by the
conflicting emotions that you expressed towards the end. I understand that it
can be difficult to make decisions when we are overwhelmed by our emotions.
In my own experience, I have found that taking a moment of stillness and
reflection can be very helpful in gaining a deeper understanding of the
situation and connecting with our own humanity and that of others. This is the
message that I try to convey in my poem, "Keeping Quiet."
I would advise you to take a moment to be still and contemplative before
making any decisions about the fate of the people at the roadside stand. By
quieting your mind and being present in the moment, you may be able to
understand their struggles and pain objectively, and gain a new perspective
about your own place in the world too. I also feel that by breaking from your
routine and taking a moment of stillness and reflection, you might gain a
deeper understanding of the situation and make a more functional decision.
I believe that this moment of reflection could help you to see beyond your
conflicting emotions. We are all human, after all, and before connecting with
others, and resolving their issues, we must try to connect with our own selves
to advice from a place of balance and calm.
I hope this advice is helpful to you. Please let me know if there is anything else
I can do to support you.
Warmly,
Pablo Neruda
