Formation

Ideal players
PRINCIPLES

My philosophy is based on relativity. This basically means adjusting your role

to the team based on the situation being faced. Here are some key examples

When facing a low block, I wouldn’t want to use two wide wingers, only two
wide players. As a result, I’d prefer for one of the wingers to slightly invert
and get into the box to be a second striker.

This wastes a lot of potential for chances

This creates a lot more potential for chance creation

Another example is my fullbacks, with my formation mainly being 4 at the

back and a double pivot, I’ll require a 3rd man in the midfield at times, whilst
simultaneously providing cover at the back, so my fullback step in the line
between the center backs and double pivot, and whoever has the ball nearer
steps into midfield.

For instance:

Another instance is where the center back acts as a false full back, to free
the fullback and invert the winger, this creates a man advantage, and
multiple sources on the flank. The other fullback will then act as a false
center back.
The major philosophy is to manipulate space by using it against the
opponent or in your favor. This will mean drawing the opponent to areas
where they open up space and be vulnerable to chance creation, or by
having a man advantage in buildup which will be key in ball progression and
chance creation. An example could be, using the nine to form a duo with the
10 or go out to the flank, and if the opposition center back to follow, it opens
up space in a dangerous space for the opponent. If he doesn’t it follow it,
then means we get a man advantage when building up and helps in
controlling the opponent and creating chances at will.

Here are some examples:

If he doesn’t follow, we get a man or even a two-man advantage in buildup.

If he does follow, we get runners into the space vacated.

The two types of formation I use are mainly a back four and sometime a
three, as follows:

FORMATIONS

Back four – 424

This formation prioritizes advantages in building up to withstand the

opponents pressure using the principles.

BUILD UP

The back four spreads across the width of the pitch with the fullbacks slightly
ahead. The double pivots get close to each other and are mobile, going to
where they are needed. The wingers are in a position to either invert or give
support out wide. The front two drop deep only if the opponent is hyper
aggressive and we need more men in buildup.

A usual press will be the wingers shadow pressing and covering the center
backs, the striker and 10 on the pivot, the pivots on the two men inside, and
the fullbacks on the wingers.
The solution; rotation. It’s a chain reaction, the center back goes infield, the
pivot goes deeper, the center back goes out wider and the fullback goes in
field, the other pivot could be mobile and find space to collect. The goal is to
create a bit of chaos but with men where we can build up relatively under
less pressure.

If there’s no hyper aggressive press and it’s passive, the opponents will leave
space between their players and its primarily the pivots role to collect. Any
player who collects should have at least two options in two different
directions to help with pressure relief. If the winger isn’t under pressure, he
can offer support on the wide areas, where after receiving he can pass in
field or a bit higher, since dribbling in your own half is a bit of a risk.
TRANSITION PHASE

After the second man receives, his teammates, at least two will find space to
try to receive and progress into the opponents half , this will be either the
fullbacks wingers or one of the front two.

If there’s no space to run in behind and create chances, then pas to the
slowly progressing pivots or center backs, to help get the defensive line
higher. After settling, the primary structure will resemble a very narrow 2231,
with a bit of mobility depending on the opponent’s movements.
BALL CIRCULATION

There are four key circulations around the pitch, giving freedom to the
players involved.

The first is in the center with the center backs and pivots, forms a four v
three against the opponents front three, if any more are involved then it
means a man is in space elsewhere. The center backs and pivots are free to
move to make themselves available to progress the ball into space.

The second is building on the sides, this will include one of the pivots, the
fullback, one of the wingers and either the center back or one of the front
tow, with same principles as the above combination.
The fourth is building down the middle, where the pivots come close, the
winger have absolute freedom to avail themselves, the fullbacks will be the
main source of width, and one of the front two will drop deep, depending on
the press of the opponents.
