The Menstrual Cycle

The menstrual cycle is a monthly process in women that prepares the body for pregnancy. It
involves four key phases:

1. Menstrual Phase:
○ Shedding of the uterine lining.
○ Occurs for 3-5 days.
2. Follicular Phase:
○ Follicle growth in the ovaries stimulated by FSH.
○ Estrogen levels rise, thickening the uterine lining.
3. Ovulatory Phase:
○ LH surge triggers ovulation, releasing a mature egg.
4. Luteal Phase:
○ Ruptured follicle becomes the corpus luteum, producing progesterone.
○ Maintains the thickened uterine lining.
○ If no fertilization, the corpus luteum degenerates, leading to menstruation.
Hormonal Regulation:

● FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone): Stimulates follicle growth.

● LH (Luteinizing Hormone): Triggers ovulation and corpus luteum formation.
● Estrogen: Thickens the uterine lining.
● Progesterone: Maintains the uterine lining.
