Flow Theory

Flow theory is drawn from the field of positive psychology, which is the feeling of ‘being in the zone. This
state of flow means that you can intensely focus on problems, anxiety disappears and time passes
without notice (Csikszentmihalyi, 1990).

Csikszentmihalyi has identified characteristics of the flow process which are thought to link to a
reduction of anxiety.

1. Complete concentration on the task

2. Clarity of goals and reward in mind and immediate feedback
3. Transformation of time (speeding up/slowing down of time)
4. The experience is intrinsically rewarding, has an end itself
5. Effortlessness and ease
6. There is a balance between challenge and skills
7. Actions and awareness are merged, losing self-conscious rumination
8. There is a feeling of control over the task

Students often struggle to get to this point of flow because of the many distractions they face. What is
distracting your ability to focus?

There are a number of free software applications that are useful to helping students set goals

These tools allow goal tracking, the setting of purpose, achievement date setting and the creation of
action plans for smaller goals that build into larger goals. Some tools support community sharing
because social support is thought to be an important predictor of successful goal achievement.

Other tools such as meditation can increase the potential that someone will reach a state of flow
alternatively, many students report using music as a way of facilitating concentration and research would
tend to support their experience. There are now a range of music tracks on the market that claim to
have been designed with the purpose of helping students reach flow.
