Lecture 19 & 20

Tasnuva Ashrafee MAT101

A conic section or conic is the locus of a point which moves in such a way that its distance from a fixed point bears a constant ratio to its distance from a fixed line (not pass through the fixed point).

Ellipse
The equation of an ellipse is written by using the standard formulas

where

2a is the length of the major axis, 2b is the length of the minor axis, and is the distance from the center (h , k) to each focus.

If a>b then the line joining (-a,0) and (a,0) is called the major axis

(-c, o) -a

(c,o) a

Hyperbola:
1

A hyperbola with center at the origin (0,0), is the graph of

The graph of the equation on the left has the following properties: x intercepts at a , no y intercepts. The graph of the equation on the right has the following properties: y intercepts at a , no x intercepts. a, b and c are related by c2 = a2 + b2. The length of the transverse axis is 2a, and the length of the conjugate axis is 2b.

Equation of Parabola
This is an applet to explore the equation of a parabola and its properties. The equation used is the standard equation that has the form (y - k)2 = 4a(x - h) where h and k are the x- and y-coordinates of the vertex of the parabola and a is a non zero real number. Another equation is (x - h)2 = 4b (y - k) The equation y 2 = 4ax is considered to be the standard equation of a parabola. Figure 1 is the graphical representation of this parabola.

X Figure 1

Where the point (0,a)is the focus of the parabola and the line y = a is the directrix of the parabola. Any point p(x,y) on the parabola of the parabola is always equidistance from the focus (0,a) and the directrix y=-a . if x 2 = 4by then

General second degree equation

The equation of the from
ax 2 + by 2 + 2hxy + 2 gx + 2 fy + c = 0 is called .the second degree general equation.

When a=b and h=0 a circle.

Example
9 x 2 + 4 y 2 +18 x + 8 y 23 = 0

Here a=9,b=4,h=0,g=9,f=4 a b So next a circle

9 x 2 + 2.3 x.3 + (3) 2 3 2 + 4 y 2 + 2.2 y.2 + 2 2 2 2 23 = 0

(3 x + 3) 2 + ( 2 y + 2) 2 9 4 23 = 0 9( x +1) 2 + 4( y +1) 2 = 36
2 2 ( x + 1) + ( y + 1) = 1

2 2 ( x +21) + ( y +21) = 1 2 3 Represent an ellipse whose center is at (-1,-1)
