We fill an aquarium with water. We illuminate the surface of the water with a red laser.
a) The laser is oriented perpendicular to the surface of the water. What is the value of the
angle of incidence?
b) Using Descartes' second law, deduce the value of the angle of refraction

c) We now illuminate the water surface with an incidence of 45°. What will be the value
of the angle of refraction?
Data: refractive index of water𝑛𝑒𝑎𝑢 = 1.33

Exercise 2
One of the rays of a beam of light, propagating through the air, and arriving on a flat surface
of glass. Data: refractive index of glass𝑛𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑟𝑒 = 1.52
1. Diagram the situation illustrating the phenomenon of refraction.
2. Write Descartes' second law.
3. Deduce the value of the angle of incidence making it possible to obtain an angle of
refraction of 20°.

Mirror and spherical diopter

Exercise 3
We consider a convex spherical mirror, with center C, vertex S with radius of curvature 𝑅 =
𝑆𝐶 = 30𝑐𝑚and an object 𝐴𝐵of height 1 cm.
1. Give the position of focus F.
2. Determine the image 𝐴′ 𝐵 ′ by 𝐴𝐵specifying its position, its nature, its meaning and its
size in the following different cases: 𝑆𝐶 = −30 𝑐𝑚 ; 𝑆𝐴 = 20 𝑐𝑚.
Specify in each case the nature of the object. Construct the image.
Exercise 4
A spherical diopter with center C, vertex S, and radius of curvature equal to 10 cm
separates air with index n=1 (object space) and a medium with index n'=4/3 (image space). Its
convex face is turned towards the air.

1. Find the position of the foci F and F' of this diopter.

2. Find the position of a real object AB perpendicular to SC and of its image A'B' for
linear magnification 𝛿 = +2.
3. Trace the path of a beam of rays coming from point B of the object.

Exercise 5
A luminous object AB of height 1 cm is perpendicular to the principal axis of a thin lens of focal
length 20 mm. In order to locate the image A'B' of this object AB. We have traced below, two
light rays coming from the object AB.

1. Is it a converging or diverging lens? For what ?

2. What is the relationship between the focal length and the vergence of a lens? Specify
the units of the different quantities cited.
3. Calculate the vergence of this lens.
4. On the diagram below, position the image focus F' and trace another light ray coming
from point B.
