Coming back to story...
Once upon a time there
was a King, he
was one of the richest
king at his time , But
He was never satisfied,
he always wanted
To be more rich.
Other than gold, it was his beautiful
daughter who was very dear to him.

He has prayed hardly and get this boon

that whatever he -touches turned into a
gold.

He touched chairs, tables, pillars, and

many other things. All of them turned
into gold. A while later, he became
hungry. He called his servants and
ordered them to serve food. As soon as
he touched the food, it turned into gold.
He was upset.
Suddenly his
daughter came
running to him. He
touched her head.
She, too, turned into
He began crying. He started
praying again. God appeared and
said, I gave you what you asked
for. Do you want some more
riches?” King replied, “No! No! I
don’t need any more. My greed for
riches had made me blind. My
daughter has become a statue. I
don’t need any gold or riches. I
only want my daughter back.”
God said, “As
you say, dear
son. I shall take
back the boon.”
God
disappeared.He
saw his daughter
come back to life.
He never became
greedy again !!

CHEMISTRY
??
DID YOU REMEMBER THIS STONE
FROM HARRY POTTER ??
The philosopher's
stone, more properly
philosophers' stone or
stone of the
philosophers is a
mythical alchemical
substance capable of
turning base metals
such as mercury into
gold or silver.
Chemistry came up as
a result of search of
two interested things:
a) PHILOSOPHER STONE - which would convert all base metals( common
metals) into gold.

a) ELIXIR OF LIFE- which would grant immorality.

when a
magnesium
ribbon is burnt in
oxygen, it gets
converted to
magnesium
oxide. This
description of a
chemical reaction
in a sentence
1- SENTENCE FORM
form is quite long
2- WORD FORM

The simplest way to do this is to write it in the form of

a word-equation.

The word-equation for the above reaction would be

– Magnesium + Oxygen → Magnesium oxide
(Reactants) (Product)
3- EQUATION FORM

3- Equation FORM :
Mg + O2 = MgO
SINCE WE ARE LAZY BUT SMART :

We will go for
that form
which takes
the minimum
time and effort
THREE WAYS to do So :

1- SENTENCE FORM : When a magnesium ribbon is burnt in oxygen, it gets converted

to magnesium oxide.

2- WORD FORM :
Magnesium + Oxygen = Magnesium Oxide
( Reactants ) ( Product)

3- Equation FORM :
Mg + O2 = MgO
Which one is best

3- Equation FORM :
Mg + O2 = MgO

Single Replacement Reactions

• Also called single displacement reactions

• Single replacement reaction = a chemical change in which one element replaces a second
element in a compound

• You can identify single replacement reactions by noting that both the reactants and the
products consist of an element and a compound.
Ex: 2K(s) + 2H2O(l) → 2KOH(aq) + H2(g)

Ex: Zn(s) + Cu(NO3)2 (aq) → Cu(s) + Zn(NO3)2(aq)

• Whether one metal will displace another metal from a

compound depends upon the relative reactivities of
the two metals.

• Activity series (of metals) = lists metals in order of

decreasing reactivity

Why should a magnesium ribbon be
cleaned before burning in air ?

Answer:

Magnesium gets covered with

a layer of magnesium oxide
when kept in air for a long
time. This layer hinders the
burning of magnesium. Hence,
it is to be cleaned before
burning.
Write a balanced chemical equation with state symbols for the
following reactions :
(i) Solutions of barium chloride and sodium sulphate in water
react to give insoluble barium sulphate and the solution of
sodium chloride.
(ii) Sodium hydroxide solution (in water) reacts with
hydrochloric acid solution (in water) to produce sodium chloride
solution and water.

Answer:
(i) BaCl2 (aq) + Na2SO4 (aq) → BaSO4(s) + 2NaCl (aq)
(ii) NaOH (aq) + HCl(aq) → NaCl(aq) + H2O(l)
Write the balanced equation for the following chemical reactions.
(i) Hydrogen + Chlorine → Hydrogen chloride
(ii) Barium chloride + Aluminium sulphate → Barium sulphate + Aluminium chloride
(iii) Sodium + Water → Sodium hydroxide + Hydrogen

Answer:
(i) H2 + Cl2 → 2HCl
(ii) 3 BaCl2 + Al2(SO4)3 → BaSO4 + 2 AlCl3
(iii) 2Na + 2H2O → 2NaOH + H2↑

• Decomposition reaction = a chemical change
Decomposition in which a single compound breaks down into
reactions two or more simpler products
– Ex: 2HgO(s) → 2Hg(l) + O2(g)

• It is usually difficult to predict the products of

decomposition reactions
– Products can be any combination or original
reactant

• Most decomposition reactions require energy

in the form of light, heat or electricity
2FeSO4(s) -----heat---------> Fe2O3(s) + SO2(g) + SO3 (g)

CaCO3(s) -----heat----> CaO(s) + CO2 (g)
