Chapter – 2 About the Industry

The MARKETING AND SALES

14
Defining Sales and Marketing
Sales include the activities and operations involved in the promotion and
selling of goods and services.
Marketing includes the process of promoting, selling and distributing a
product or service.

These statements help us understand 2 very important aspects of the

relationship between sales and marketing:-
 Both the groups and their responsibilities are closely linked
 Marketing plays a vital role in supporting sales

Key Responsibilities of Sales and Marketing

Even though both the functions are grouped separately, their functions overlap
each other. Businesses that understand the critical areas where these functions
overlap can immensely benefit from the combined efforts of both the teams.

Responsibilities of Sales

 Follow-up
A key responsibility of sales includes follow up. This means following up with the leads
generated by the marketing department.

 Relationship Building
Nowadays modern sales focus on relationship-building between the buyer and the seller. An
effective salesperson can understand the needs of the buyer and develop a rapport delivering a
persuasive (not too pushy) message differentiating the company’s product from its
competitors.

 Closing & Retention

A salesperson is responsible for turning leads into customers and is judged on his or her ability
to close the deal. Also, by checking in with an existing client, a sales team member
demonstrates that he or she has a long-term interest in the client’s success and is not just a one-
time sale.

Responsibilities of Marketing

 Awareness
Brand awareness is one of the key responsibilities of a marketer. An effort to build awareness
of the brand and its product and service is the first step in the process.

 Engagement
Engagement efforts help build an initial awareness campaign to deepen a consumer’s
connection to the company or the product.

15
 Conversion & Retention
Conversion is a critical transition of a potential customer to a known lead. For marketers,
conversion marks as the completion of the web form which starts from the instigation of a chat
to a customer service line. Retention, on the other hand, helps a business grow its repeat
customers. This function of marketing helps maintain awareness and engagement after a sale.

Sales vs. Marketing

In its formal usage, marketing serves as the umbrella function that

manages advertising, promotions, public relations and sales. Marketing
functions include research and development, pricing, distribution,
customer service, sales and communications. In its narrowest form, a
sales department advises the marketing department based on its
feedback with customers and focuses on customer contact to drive sales.
The marketing department tells the sales staff what to emphasize and
what sales tools is will use.

Sales and Marketing Division

Because many small businesses don’t have the expertise – or even need
– to pursue a classical marketing strategy, the sales manager handles
marketing duties as part of his responsibilities. The sales division takes
the lead in setting strategies and decides what marketing
communications it needs to support its efforts.

Sales Goal-Setting

The sales and marketing division sets individual sales rep quotas, as well
as the overall volume goal for the company. To achieve sales goals, it
creates bonus and commissions structures. The division uses past sales
figures and expert projections to estimate which products will sell where
and in what amounts.

Product, Pricing and Distribution Planning

Because sales and marketing managers spend much of their time talking
directly to customers, they guide the development of products and
services. They recommend modifying or dropping products or services or
adding new ones to the company’s mix, based on what customers want.
A sales and marketing department has the responsibility for deciding
where the company should sell and what its prices should be.

This includes choosing which, if any, intermediaries the company will

use, such as wholesalers, distributors or retailers. This requires the

16
division to research where the company’s competitors are selling and
where its customers say they want to shop.

Customer Service and Sales

To maintain its customer base, sales and marketing takes responsibility

for making sure buyers are happy, as well as trying to upsell them. The
division is proactive in contacting customers with surveys and special
offers and is reactive in attempting to solve any problems that might
cause the company to lose customers.

Promotions and Marketing

The word “promotions” covers a broad array of sales and marketing

efforts, including advertising, social media, public relations, sales, event
sponsorship, cause marketing, discounts, loyalty programs, rebates,
trade show appearances and buyer’s clubs. The sales and marketing
team decides which publications to advertise in, which TV, radio or
websites are best for promoting the company’s products or services, and
what contests, giveaways, discounts or other marketing methods will
help it boost sales.

CHAPTER-3

CONCEPTUAL FRAME WORK

18
19
20
My role and responsibilities

Task-1
I used to collect data about all the Indian influencers who
have big followings so that they could help us in hiring
people.
Our company requires some social media coverage so that it can make the recruiting
process easier. So I collected information about the influencers who can help us by
promoting or influencing people to join ExlCareer. I prepared an Excel file and then shared it
with the company.

Task-2
Creating official posts for Jessant’s website through the
WIX website
WIX is a website where we can create a post then we can download it or share it on our
websites. So I used to create posts for our LinkedIn page, and then get those posts
approved by my seniors.

21
Task-3
Creating Word documents with all the necessary information about our competitors
and with all their relevant information.
As my next task, I searched about our competitors with their full details including their
names, addresses, official website contact, etc. I searched for those companies through
LinkedIn or Google. It was near about 100 companies and then created an Excel file. Then I
converted this Excel file into a Word document and shared it with my superiors.

Task –4

Explaining tasks to my junior subordinates and helping

them out.
As my final task, my seniors asked me to explain everything to your junior who has just
joined so that he can get better and can start with those tasks.

22
CHAPTER-4

Research And Analysis

23
Research is the process of investigating a topic in an in-depth, systematic manner. You will then have
to analyze that research to examine its implications and support a defensible claim about the topic.
Sometimes writers do not conduct research when writing an analytical essay, but they usually still
analyze sources that have used research. Learning how to conduct and analyze research is thus a
critical part of strengthening analytical writing skills.

When people are interested in a topic and want to learn more about it, they conduct research. In
academic and professional settings, research follows systematic, critical processes.

Analysis is the process of critically examining research. When analyzing a source, researchers reflect
on many elements, including the following:

• How the information is presented

• The author's main point
• The evidence the author uses
• The credibility of the author and the evidence
• The potential for bias
• The implications of the information

Research and Analysis Types

The type of research people conduct depends on what they are interested in learning about. When
writing analytical essays about literature, authors typically consult primary sources, secondary
sources, or both. Then they craft an analytical argument in which they claim the sources are
supported with direct evidence.

Analyzing Primary Sources

A primary source is an original document or first-hand account.

For instance, plays, novels, poems, letters, and journal entries are all examples of primary sources.
Researchers can find primary sources in libraries, archives, and online. To analyze primary sources,
researchers should follow the following steps:

24
1. Observe the Source
Take a look at the source at hand and preview it. How is it structured? How long is it? What is the
title? Who is the author? What are some defining details about it?

For example, imagine a student is faced with the following prompt:

Pick an 18th-century English poet to research. Evaluate how their personal lives shaped the themes
of their poetry.

To address this prompt, the researcher might analyze a letter their chosen poet sent to a friend.
When observing the letter, they might note that the writing is neat cursive and includes salutations
such as "faithfully yours." Without even reading the letter, the researcher can already tell that this is
a formal letter and infer that the writer is trying to come across as respectful.

2. Read the Source

Next, researchers should read the entire primary source. Developing the skill of active reading
(discussed later in this article) will help readers engage with a primary source. While reading, readers
should take notes about the most important details in the text and what they suggest about the
research topic.

For instance, the researcher analyzing the historical letter should note what the main purpose of the
letter is. Why was it written? Is the writer asking for anything? Does the writer recount any
important stories or pieces of information that are central to the text?

Sometimes primary sources are not written texts. For example, photographs can also be primary
sources. If you can't read a source, observe it and ask analytical questions.
3. Reflect on the Source
When analyzing a primary source, readers should reflect on what it shows about the research topic.
Questions for analysis include:

• What is the main idea of this text?

• What is the purpose of the text?
• What is the historical, social, or political context of this text?
• How might the context shape the meaning of the text?
• Who is the intended audience of the text?
• What does this text reveal about the research topic?
The precise questions a reader should ask when analyzing a primary source depending on the
research topic. For example, when analyzing the letter from the poet, the student should compare
the main ideas in the letter to the main ideas in some of the writer's poems. This will help them
develop an argument about how elements of the poet's personal life shaped the themes of their
poetry.

When analyzing literary primary sources, writers should examine and reflect on the elements such as
characters, dialogue, plot, narrative structure, point of view, setting, and tone. They should also
analyze how the author uses literary techniques like figurative language to convey messages. For

25
instance, you might identify an important symbol in a novel. To analyze it, you could argue that the
author uses it to develop a particular theme.

Analysing Secondary Sources

When researchers consult a source that is not original, they are consulting a secondary source. For
example, scholarly journal articles, newspaper articles, and textbook chapters are all secondary
sources.

A secondary source is a document that interprets information from a primary source.

Secondary sources can help researchers understand primary sources. Authors of secondary sources
analyze primary sources. The elements they analyze might be elements other readers of the primary
source might not have noticed. Using secondary sources also makes for credible analytical writing
because writers can show their audience that other credible scholars support their points of view.

To analyze secondary sources, researchers should follow the same steps as analyzing primary
sources. However, they should ask slightly different analytical questions, such as the following:

• Where was this source published?

• What sources does the author use? Are they credible?
• Who is the intended audience?
• Is it possible that this interpretation is biased?
• What is the author's claim?
• Is the author's argument convincing?
• How does the author use their sources to support their claim?
• What does this source suggest about the research topic?
For example, a writer analyzing the themes of a particular poet's body of work should search for
secondary sources in which other writers interpret the poet's work. Reading other scholars'
interpretations can help writers better understand the poetry and develop their perspectives.

To find credible secondary sources, writers can consult academic databases. These databases often
have trustworthy articles from peer-reviewed scholarly journals, newspaper articles, and book
reviews.

A job description is a tool that explains the tasks, duties, functions, and responsibilities of a
position. It details who performs a specific type of work, how that work is to be completed,
and the frequency and purpose of the work as it relates to the organization's mission and
goals.

29
Research Methodology
Research methodology simply refers to the practical “how” of a research study. More specifically, it’s
about how a researcher systematically designs a study to ensure valid and reliable results that
address the research aims, objectives, and research questions. Specifically, how the researcher went
about deciding:
• What type of data to collect (e.g., qualitative or quantitative data)
• Who to collect it from (i.e., the sampling strategy)
• How to collect it (i.e., the data collection method)
• How to analyze it (i.e., the data analysis methods)

Within any formal piece of academic research (be it a dissertation, thesis, or journal article), we will
find a research methodology chapter or section that covers the aspects mentioned above.
Importantly, a good methodology chapter explains not just what methodological choices were
made, but also explains why they were made. In other words, the methodology chapter should
justify the design choices, by showing that the chosen methods and techniques are the best fit for
the research aims, objectives, and research questions.

So, it’s the same as research design?

Not quite. As we mentioned, research methodology refers to the collection of practical decisions
regarding what data you’ll collect, from whom, how you’ll collect it, and how you’ll analyze it.
Research design, on the other hand, is more about the overall strategy you’ll adopt in your study.

For example, whether you’ll use an experimental design in which you manipulate one variable while
controlling others. You can learn more about research design and the various design types here.

What are qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods?

Qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods are different types of methodological approaches,

distinguished by their focus on words, numbers, or both. This is a bit of an oversimplification, but it's
a good starting point for understanding.

Qualitative research refers to research that focuses on collecting and analyzing words (written or
spoken) and textual or visual data, whereas quantitative research focuses on measurement and
testing using numerical data. Qualitative analysis can also focus on other “softer” data points, such
as body language or visual elements.

It’s quite common for a qualitative methodology to be used when the research aims and research
questions are exploratory. For example, a qualitative methodology might be used to understand
people’s perceptions about an event that took place, or a political candidate running for president.

In contrast to this, a quantitative methodology is typically used when the research aims and research
questions are confirmatory. For example, a quantitative methodology might be used to measure the

30
relationship between two variables (e.g. personality type and likelihood to commit a crime) or to test
a set of hypotheses.

The mixed-method methodology attempts to combine the best of both qualitative and quantitative
methodologies to integrate perspectives and create a rich picture.

What is a sampling strategy?

Sampling is about deciding who (or where) you’re going to collect your data from. Why does this
matter? Well, generally it’s not possible to collect data from every single person in your group of
interest (this is called the “population”), so you’ll need to engage a smaller portion of that group
that’s accessible and manageable (this is called the “sample”).
How you go about selecting the sample (i.e., your sampling strategy) will have a major impact on
your study. There are many different sampling methods you can choose from, but the two
overarching categories are probability sampling and non-probability sampling.

Probability sampling involves using a completely random sample from the group of people you’re
interested in. This is comparable to tmarketing and sales owing the names of all potential
participants into a hat, shaking it up, and picking out the “winners”. By using a completely random
sample, you’ll minimize the risk of selection bias and the results of your study will be more
generalizable to the entire population. Non-probability sampling, on the other hand, doesn’t use a
random sample. For example, it might involve using a convenience sample, which means you’d only
interview or survey people that you have access to (perhaps your friends, family, or work
colleagues), rather than a truly random sample. With nonprobability sampling, the results are
typically not generalizable. What are data collection methods?

As the name suggests, data collection methods simply refer to how you go about collecting the data
for your study. Some of the most common data collection methods include:
• Interviews (which can be unstructured, semi-structured, or structured)
• Focus groups and group interviews
• Surveys (online or physical surveys)
• Observations (watching and recording activities)
• Biophysical measurements (e.g., blood pressure, heart rate, etc.)
• Documents and records (e.g., financial reports, court records, etc.)

The choice of which data collection method to use depends on your overall research aims and
research questions, as well as practicalities and resource constraints.

resourcefulness. I have learned how to solve problems by getting help from the seniors.

8. Adaptability: The professional world is dynamic, and internships often expose us to

different situations. Being adaptable and open to change is a valuable skill in any career.
I have tried my best to adopt new procedures being taught by my seniors and try to
adopt all the new methodologies while working.

9. Self-Discovery: Internships can provide insights into your strengths, weaknesses, and
areas of interest. This self-awareness is crucial for making informed decisions about your
career path. Internship allows us to gain experience in different fields. This internship
allowed me to think about whether I would like to work in this field in the future or not.

Conclusion
An internship is a period of work experience, usually offered by companies or organizations,
where individuals, often students or recent graduates, engage in practical, hands-on work in
a specific industry or field. Internships can be paid or unpaid, and they can vary in duration,
ranging from a few weeks to several months.

Internships serve several purposes:

• Skill Development: Interns have the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge

gained in the classroom to real-world situations, enhancing their skills and gaining
practical experience.

• Networking: Internships provide a chance to build professional networks by

interacting with professionals in the chosen industry. Networking can open doors to
future job opportunities and mentorship.

• Resume Building: Having internship experience on a resume can make a candidate

more attractive to employers. It demonstrates that the individual has practical
experience and is familiar with the expectations of the workplace.

• Career Exploration: Internships allow individuals to explore a specific career field,

helping them determine if it aligns with their interests and goals.

• Transition to Employment: In some cases, internships serve as a stepping stone to

full-time employment. Companies often use internships as a way to evaluate
potential future hires.
\In a nutshell, this internship has been an excellent and rewarding experience. I can
conclude that there has been a lot I’ve learned from my work at Jessant Needless to say,
the technical aspects of the work I’ve done are not flawless and could be improved
provided enough time. I believe my time spent in research and discovering it was well
worth it and contributed to finding an acceptable solution to build a fully functional web
service. Two main things that I’ve learned the importance of are time-management skills
and self-motivation.
